Ofterschwang: Mountain Trails, Winter Sports and Village Delights
Accommodation in Ofterschwang
In Ofterschwang, winter sports, trails on the Ofterschwanger Horn and glimpses into village life come together. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by asking yourself which experiences you want to shape your stay: slopes and cross-country trails, a themed trail on the mountain, or discoveries related to regional food and local history. The activities each have a different focus, without requiring you to limit your holiday to just one type of experience.

Winter Sports on the Slopes, Cross-Country Trails and Toboggan Run
The Gunzesried-Ofterschwang World Cup ski area offers 18 varied kilometres of pistes, from easy family runs to the World Cup course. This gives you a choice of different types of runs within the ski area. There is also direct access to an extensive network of cross-country trails around the Ofterschwang ski area. When planning your activities, you can decide whether you’d rather ski on the pistes or focus on cross-country skiing.
A natural toboggan run leads from the mountain station of the Weltcup-Express and the Ossi-Reichert-Bahn for around one kilometre to the middle station of the Ossi-Reichert-Bahn. If you’d rather ride downhill scooters than a toboggan, you can take a roughly 3.63-kilometre descent from the mountain station of the Weltcup-Express down into the valley. There’s a leisurely or a more sporty option. The modern Weltcup-Express four-seat chairlift reaches the mountain station in six minutes.
There’s another cross-country skiing option in the wider Oberallgäu region: the Sonnenalp loop runs around Tiefenberger Moos and is considered one of the most beautiful cross-country trails in the Oberallgäu. It broadens the choice across the wider travel region, while the network of trails around the Ofterschwang ski area offers another option for your stay.
Adventure Trail and Activities on the Ofterschwanger Horn
The approximately 3.9-kilometre Stuimändle adventure trail is a circular route on the Ofterschwanger Horn. It starts at the Weltcup-Hütte by the mountain station, where there’s an adventure playground. Several stations share information about wet meadows, geology, water and wind; there’s also art to discover in the forest. The loop thus combines nature-related themes and art with a playground at the starting point. During the outing, families can pay particular attention to which of the stations spark their children’s curiosity.
Another way to explore the area actively is the Forest and Meadow cycling tour. It starts at the valley station of the cable car in Ofterschwang and runs along the foot of the Ofterschwanger Horn towards Sigiswang. If you like to include a bike ride in your holiday, you can consider adding this option to your day’s plans.
Village Produce and Local History
The “Good Things from the Village” circular hiking trail passes through Ofterschwang, including visits to both dairies and a wholegrain bakery. The Hüttenberg mountain dairy produces Allgäu mountain cheese, other cheese specialities, yoghurt and butter. The trail and the products mentioned offer a different way to get to know the village: alongside activities on the mountain, local food and the dairy also come into focus.
The present-day late Baroque parish church of St Alexander is part of the village’s history. It was consecrated on 23 July 1760. If you’re interested in architecture and churches, you can add this historic landmark to your plans alongside the nature and leisure activities.
Getting Here and Choosing Your Holiday Focus
Ofterschwang can be reached from Sonthofen by local public transport. The route from Blaichach to Gunzesried can also be travelled by public transport. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can focus on the type of holiday you want: winter sports and cross-country skiing, the loop on the Ofterschwanger Horn, or a combination of cycling, the village trail and regional produce. If you’d like to include several of these interests, you can weigh them up together when planning your stay instead of basing your decision on just one activity.
