Monastery, Church and Art

The former Augustinian canons’ monastery was founded in 1409 by the Burgraves of Nuremberg, Johann III and Friedrich VI, and rebuilt by 1468. A notable work in the monastery church is the Annunciation relief by Veit Stoß: created for the church in 1513, it is now housed in the former sacrament house. The cloister also tells the story of the monastery’s construction. It is considered the best-preserved cloister in Middle Franconia. Some of its rib vaults have carved keystones; a net vault spans three and a half bays in the south wing.

In the Evangelical Town Church, the choir windows, created toward the end of the 19th century, depict scenes from the life of Christ in vivid colors. The historic buildings of the former monastery also serve as a setting for concerts and theater performances. Langenzenn thus offers various ways to explore history and culture side by side: architecture, a work by Veit Stoß, and events in a historic setting.

Theater and Local History

The Klosterhofspiele Langenzenn were founded in 1981 and take place annually. The amateur theater company performs under professional direction and has been active for more than 30 years. If you are interested in theater, you can keep this recurring cultural highlight in mind when planning your trip; check specific performance dates separately.

Geology and architectural history are among the topics covered at the local history museum. The exhibition presents the geology of the Zenn and Farrnbach valleys, including uranium ore from Dillenberg. Romanesque sandstone masonry has been preserved in the museum’s foundations, which is why it is thought to be the oldest building in the town. The historic Fronveste has been used as an extension of the local history museum since 1995. Its basement houses an old town pharmacy dating from 1557, while the upper floor provides information about the town’s history.

Exploring the Zenn

The Langenzenn Siebener Cycle Route passes through an interesting cultural landscape. In some places it crosses the Zenn; it also runs alongside quiet streams and biotopes, lush meadows, hedgerows, groups of trees and forests. These landscape features give the ride its distinctive character. The Hohenzollern Experience Cycle Route passes through Langenzenn’s old town and by the monastery. At the monastery entrance, objects can be brought to life using an app.

The ZennOase also brings together a range of activities. Located right by the Zenn, it extends for about 200 meters and includes an exercise trail, a quiet area and a beer garden. There is also an adventure playground and a playground for small children, a maze, a water playground and a bouldering rock. If you are traveling with children, you can factor these specific attractions into your plans for the day rather than focusing solely on museums or historic buildings.

The ZennOase has public plantings of native fruit, vegetables and herbs. Visitors may harvest from these edible plantings. This is a distinctive, everyday aspect of a visit: alongside the cycle route and playground and exercise facilities, making use of these plantings is also part of what the place offers.

Tours and Choosing Your Trip

Tours in Langenzenn are offered to locals, newcomers and visitors, covering the market square, monastery, church, Lindenturm, local history museum and Fronveste. The local history association also opens its museums to groups outside regular hours by prior arrangement. If you are planning a tour or museum visit for a group, be sure to make arrangements in advance.

When choosing a vacation rental in Langenzenn, your preferred activities can help guide your decision: monastery history and art, the annual Klosterhofspiele, museum exhibits, or the ZennOase and cycling routes each offer a different focus. Langenzenn is therefore a destination to consider if you want to plan your stay around its local cultural and landscape experiences.
