Stückberg, Wildlife Park and Bird Park
Stückberg in Eslarn is 808 metres high, and its observation tower is 32 metres tall. You can hike to the summit on circular trail 24. There are 144 steps to the top of the tower, and you can enjoy the view from its outdoor gallery. At the wildlife park on Stückberg, there is a spacious forest playground with seating.
At Eslarn Wildlife Park, quiz boards about forests, water and animals are placed around the enclosure. There is also an insect hotel, a tree telephone, a wooden sound game and a barefoot path. An information pavilion and a nature navigator are located at the entrance to the playground and wildlife enclosure. The different stations each have their own focus: puzzles, nature experiences and wayfinding complement the playground facilities.
The bird park in Bürgermeister-Karl-Roth-Kurpark offers a different nature experience. Around 200 native and 50 exotic bird species live in nine large aviaries there. The numbers may change over time. For families who enjoy watching animals, the bird park is another specific place to visit, alongside the attractions at Stückberg.
Water and seasonal activities at Atzmannsee
The shore of Atzmannsee slopes gently and is suitable for children to splash around in. The recreation area has four sand tennis courts. If you’re planning to play tennis, check the courts’ current availability in advance. In winter, you can ice-skate and play Bavarian curling there; check local conditions before taking part in these activities.
The lake offers a different kind of day out from the observation tower or hiking trails. Its gently sloping shore is a good place for families to splash around, while the tennis courts and winter activities add other seasonal options.
Hiking on circular trails
Bruckhof Circular Trail No. 20 crosses the Loisbach and passes the Roßtränkmühle before reaching the “Atzmann” trail junction. There it meets the Wallenstein-Tilly Trail, the Glass Grinder Trail and the access trail to the Goldsteig. These named waypoints and the junction can help you find your way when comparing the circular trail with the routes that meet there. Check the local trail markers before setting out.
Circular trail 24 to the summit and Bruckhof Circular Trail No. 20 offer different hiking options: one climbs to the observation tower, while the other passes the Loisbach and Roßtränkmühle on its way to a junction in the hiking network. You can choose a route based on your preferred destination and course, without conflating the two trails.
Neustadt An Der Waldnaab as a regional point of reference
The district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab is part of the Upper Palatinate Forest destination, within the broader travel destination of Neustadt An Der Waldnaab. The district offers activities such as hiking, cycling, museum visits and swimming in numerous bathing waters. One regional route with a direct connection to Eslarn is the Bockl: this 52-kilometre route follows a historic railway line from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn and can be travelled on foot, by bike or on inline skates.
The Bockl is mostly paved and traffic-free; gradients along the route rarely exceed three percent. The starting point in Neustadt an der Waldnaab is directly accessible by train. Trains run hourly to the terminus of the Nuremberg–Neustadt an der Waldnaab line, where you can transfer directly to a bike. Check the current timetable before travelling.
