Culture from everyday history to carp farming
At the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim, a walking tour takes you through 700 years of everyday life in Franconia. One remarkable building there is the Bauhofstadel: it was built between 1441 and 1444. Its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supports. If you are interested in architectural history, you will find a striking example of medieval carpentry here.
You can also explore the history of regional carp farming in more detail: at the Aischgründer Carp Museum in Neustadt an der Aisch, ten rooms tell you all about this tradition, which spans more than 1,250 years. Frankenberg Castle in Weigenheim and Hoheneck Castle in Ipsheim are among the district’s excursion destinations thanks to their impressive appearance.
From Easter to the end of October, a free guided town tour takes place every Saturday at 11 a.m. at the town hall in Neustadt an der Aisch. If you prefer to explore the town on your own, you can follow the approximately two-kilometre NeuStadtAktivWeg. This inner-city circular route connects numerous points of interest and sights, is signposted with a blue “n,” and starts at the free car park by the fairground and motorhome site.
Exploring on foot and by bike
There are various cycling options for active days. The almost 100-kilometre long-distance cycle route “from the Main to the Zenn” passes through the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. In addition, the district-wide cycling network offers themed routes for different levels: options range from leisurely rides to more challenging cycling. If you would like to include a longer route or a tour in the district in your trip, these different options may play a part in planning your day.
You can also make exploring on foot a focus of your trip. The NeuStadtAktivWeg is a short circular route in the town centre; the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks shape the wider landscape of the district. No specific route between these places is implied.
Regional cuisine throughout the year
Aischgründer mirror carp is one of the local specialities in Neustadt an der Aisch and is served from September to April, including crispy fried or blue in broth. The Aischgründer Carp Lovers’ Weeks take place every year from 1 September to 1 November at selected restaurants in the district. If you are interested in regional cuisine, you can take these dates into account when choosing when to travel.
Another seasonal occasion is the Game Weeks: they take place every year in November in the district and feature game prepared in various ways. During the Lamb Weeks, restaurateurs in the district serve lamb prepared in different ways. So, alongside carp, other regional dishes take centre stage.
Include locations and transport in your plans
Neustadt an der Aisch is a stop on the Würzburg–Nuremberg railway line and can be reached by bus, regional express and S-Bahn within the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association. Within the district, NEA Mobil takes passengers to their chosen destination by advance booking. If rail connections or the NeuStadtAktivWeg are important to you, you can consider Neustadt an der Aisch as a possible place to stay when looking for a holiday apartment. Bad Windsheim is a convenient base for visits to the open-air museum or the Franken-Therme. The salt lake at the Franken-Therme is fed with fully saturated brine; its high salt concentration creates a distinctive floating experience.
Places in the district that you can explore further include Gerhardshofen, Langenfeld, Markt Bibart, Oberscheinfeld, Uffenheim, Neustadt An Der Aisch, Scheinfeld, Neuhof An Der Zenn, Uehlfeld, Simmershofen, Münchsteinach, Obernzenn, Weigenheim, Wilhelmsdorf, Burghaslach, Bad Windsheim, Ergersheim, Burgbernheim, Markt Erlbach, Ippesheim, Emskirchen, Gutenstetten, Ipsheim, Dietersheim and Baudenbach.
