Right in the heart of Neu-Ulm, at Petrusplatz, the Edwin Scharff Museum brings together an art museum and a children’s museum under one roof. At the children’s museum, interactive exhibits and hands-on activities invite visitors of all ages to get involved. Caponier 4 also tells the story of the city’s past: it is part of the Ulm/Neu-Ulm Federal Fortress and is one of Neu-Ulm’s few well-preserved historic monuments. In Kellmünz, the Caelius Mons Archaeological Park recalls the time when the Raetian Limes, running along the Iller and Danube rivers, formed the western border of the Roman Empire. Built on ancient foundations, the museum tower documents the history of the Roman province of Raetia and the findings from archaeological excavations.

If you’re interested in monastic history and sacred art, you can visit the Roggenburg Monastery Museum. It presents the history of the Imperial Abbey and its territory from its foundation in 1126 to secularisation in 1803. The focus is on sacred artworks from the 17th and 18th centuries, exploring the Baroque, popular piety and the history of the religious order. The Museum of Fine Arts in the Neu-Ulm District offers a different cultural perspective, with its collection of contemporary art from the region.

Experience Nature and Choose Your Own Focus

As many as 200 different bird species have been spotted at Plessenteich in Gerlenhofen, a district of Neu-Ulm. An observation tower offers views of birds resting or nesting there throughout the year. It’s an interesting place for anyone who would rather watch and linger on an outing than follow a packed programme.

For a longer exploration of nature, the Obenhausen nature excursion follows a river path for approximately 5 km through the largest lowland peatland area in the Neu-Ulm District. From Easter to October, the Bavarian Bee Museum offers the chance to watch a queen bee and her court in a glass display case and learn about the life of bees. At the Museum of Garden Culture on Jungviehweide, you can explore more than twenty themed gardens, including the insect garden, expanded in 2025, and the “Medicinal Plants of the World” garden. The grounds also include an exhibition, a library, an aroma workshop, and indoor and outdoor activity spaces. The variety of options is ideal if you prefer to observe, read about or explore nature in a garden.

The district has green river and lake landscapes, and the Upper Swabian Baroque Route also runs through the area. In Roggenburg, the Bavarian-Swabia Listening Tour starts at the Roggenburg Education Centre for Family, Environment and Culture. A free app is used for the tour; search for “Bayerisch-Schwaben.” At Donaubad in Neu-Ulm, visitors can use the sauna; in winter, an ice sports facility offers ice-skating fun.
