The Stadtresidenz Landshut is an Italian Renaissance palace of great significance for the history of art and architecture. It consists of the “German Building” and the “Italian Building”, which are connected by wings. The Italian Building was constructed from 1537 under the direction of Italian master builders. Inside the residence, vaulted halls with Italian stucco decoration and significant painted cycles of images stand out. Their subjects range from biblical and mythological scenes to historical ones.

At Trausnitz Castle, the Fool’s Staircase features monumental painted scenes from the Italian Commedia dell’arte. The large-scale depictions offer a very different way to engage with art than the architecture and painted cycles of the Stadtresidenz. If you are travelling with children, you can use the figures and scenes as a starting point for conversation. Also in the castle, in the Ladies’ Wing, is the “Art and Curiosities Chamber”. As a branch museum of the Bavarian National Museum, it recalls the collecting tradition of the Wittelsbach dukes.

Another focus is Fritz Koenig: The underground KOENIGmuseum sculpture museum in the Hofberg houses a collection of his works, which the artist donated during his lifetime. Guided tours and creative workshops on Koenig’s life and work complement the museum’s offerings. This provides a range of ways to engage with art: monumental painting, historical collections, sculptures, as well as guided tours and workshops.

Townscape, guided tours and cycling

The well-preserved historic townscape is defined by the magnificent streets of “Altstadt” and “Neustadt”, as well as narrow connecting lanes.
