Market Square, Churches and Local History

The Historic Market Square features a listed row of colorful Biedermeier façades. The predominantly two-story rendered buildings display sandstone detailing and segmental-arched carriage entrances. Look closely and you will discover a variety of architectural elements within a cohesive streetscape. Below the Market Square, the Florian Fountain adds to the historic town center; it dates from 1685.

The churches also tell different chapters of the story. The late Gothic parish church of St. James the Elder in Marktschorgast was first mentioned in 1109. The late medieval defensive wall, with its “Schneckenturm” (snail tower), has been preserved at the churchyard. The baptismal font, altar and pulpit in the Church of the Holy Trinity are made of reddish Vogtland granite—a distinctive material that links the three furnishings. Local religious history also includes the Marktschorgast Protestant Association, founded in 1898, which campaigned for the construction of its own Protestant church.

An 11-kilometer circular hiking route leads from Marktschorgast via Weißenstein and back to Marktschorgast. The approximately 8-kilometer educational and information trail along the “Schiefe Ebene” railway incline focuses on engineering and construction history. Its highlights are the incline’s most striking engineering structures. The two routes therefore offer different themes and make it easy to compare options when planning your day: a circular hike or insights into railway construction and engineering history.
