The Heunischenburg in the district of Gehülz is considered one of the oldest stone castles in Europe north of the Alps and one of the finest fortifications of the Late Bronze Age in Central Europe. In Kronach, Rosenberg Fortress brings together medieval, Renaissance and Baroque military architecture. The oldest surviving document to mention the name “Rosenberg” dates from 1249. For art from the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods, the Franconian Gallery presents 220 masterpieces of painting and sculpture from Franconia across 1,000 square metres.

Other destinations in the district offer further insights: in the main castle of Lauenstein Castle, a museum spread across more than 20 rooms displays, among other things, armour, weapons and preserved historicist furnishings. These include tiled stoves, paintings, and wall and ceiling paintings. The origins of Mitwitz Water Castle date back to the mid-13th century; its present form as a Renaissance building took shape through alterations and extensions from 1596 to 1598. Hiking trails in the wider Kronach travel region vary not only in name, but also in length and difficulty. The FrankenwaldSteigla “Entlang der Marter” is a 14.7-kilometre, moderately difficult hiking trail in Kronach. The 17.1-kilometre “Ködeltour” in Steinwiesen is rated very difficult.
