Fossils and geological history in Aubenham

The Aubenham Tertiary World is located at a former fossil site. Its exhibition uses nine displays to show what the landscape around Aubenham looked like nine million years ago, and provides information about the finds, the climate at the time and the landscape. Over the years, the collection has grown to more than 1,200 finds. The first display case features original marl slabs with fossilized leaf impressions.

The different themes of the Tertiary World also make the visit engaging: the exhibition presents geology, while the outdoor area focuses on botany. Activities can be arranged for visits by school classes and kindergarten groups. The Tertiary World is listed at number 66 on Bavaria’s list of the 100 most beautiful geotopes. Admission is free, and visitors are welcome to explore the outdoor area. In winter, access depends on the weather.

Walks and nature in the Tertiary Forest

In the Aubenham Tertiary Forest, information boards invite visitors to compare the Tertiary plant world with today’s Central European vegetation. The walk winds among plants that are unusual in Central Europe today. There are also views across the Tertiary hill country in the northern part of the Mühldorf am Inn district. Those who like to take their time observing can focus on the plants and landscape here, rather than concentrating solely on the exhibition.

The Aktionsraum Dorf Oberbergkirchen also offers an opportunity to spend time outdoors: a two-kilometre circular trail passes through public green spaces, making it possible to explore the village on foot and enjoy the natural surroundings. Six play and activity stations are connected by footpaths. This gives families with children a range of ways to spend time outdoors.

Church, crafts and regional products

St. Bartholomew’s Parish Church in Oberbergkirchen is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. During extensive renovations and partial redesign in 1938, the altars were restored to their original dark brown Early Baroque finish. The outer sides of the side altar feature gilded reliefs. A church guide is available in the church or can be requested from the parish office. This gives visitors interested in culture a tangible way to explore the history and design of the church interior.

The Bruder Konrad Chapel can be seen from far across the Isen Valley. Those interested in agriculture and regional products can also learn about another aspect of the village at the Misthilger apiary, which specializes in beekeeping and sheep farming. Bee honey and other honey products, natural cosmetics, lambskins and fresh lamb can be purchased directly from the farm or in the online shop. Groups can visit the Misthilger farm on a guided tour.
