Craftsmanship and firefighting history at the castle

The Schauenstein Municipal Local History Museum in the castle focuses on typical regional trades of the past: baking, shoemaking, home weaving, carpentry, tailoring and barbering. It also offers a glimpse of how people once lived, as well as a rich collection of regional minerals and rocks. The exhibits span everyday work and life to the geology of the region. The Upper Franconian Firefighting Museum in the same castle traces the technological development of firefighting and the historic traditions of Hof district. Its exhibits include a hand-operated fire pump dating from 1855, and the exhibition covers around 600 square metres. The contrast between traditional crafts and domestic life on the one hand, and firefighting technology on the other, offers two different ways to explore regional history. Market Square, Castle and Church

The ensemble of the castle, church and market square has remained unchanged for almost 500 years. The houses around the market square were rebuilt after the great fire of 1865, which destroyed 95 houses as well as 93 barns and outbuildings. The view across the square thus brings together the preserved ensemble and the story of a major reconstruction.

St Bartholomew’s Church also has a specific historic detail: its baptismal font was installed in 1754. Together with the castle and market square, the church is one of the landmarks named in the townscape. Trail stops and the Wachende Jungfrau

On its return to Schauenstein, the Aubachgrund Trail OS 21 crosses the listed Lehsten Bridge. On its route back through town, it also passes the park with the Wachende Jungfrau, the market square and the castle. The route thus links a series of distinct stops, from the protected bridge structure to the historic places in the town centre.

The Wachende Jungfrau is a rock formation facing the Selbitz and forms part of a small municipal park in Schauenstein. This brings a distinctive natural feature into view alongside the buildings and collections. The rock formation’s name and its setting within the park give this part of the townscape its own character.

A historic house in Neudorf

Neudorf is also part of Schauenstein. There, the Weaver’s House Museum preserves a typical smallholder’s and artisan’s house from the eastern Franconian Forest. Most of the house is furnished as it was during the lifetime of Karl Wolfrum (1879–1964). Unlike the themed collections in the castle, the focus here is on an entire historic home and workshop.
