The Franconian Forest Landscape and the Green Belt

Nordhalben is home to valuable natural habitats that support rare plant and animal species. The “Through the Bärwurzwiesen” hiking trail follows the Green Belt and crosses the Nordhalben plateau with its species-rich meadows. Along this route, you can experience both the Franconian Forest landscape and the former border area. If you are choosing a holiday apartment with hiking opportunities in mind, this route can serve as a specific point of reference when planning your stay.

From Schloßberg, the view extends across the Green Belt, neighbouring Thuringia and several Franconian Forest valleys. Schloßberg is also home to the former quarry, which is the type locality of the trace fossil “Segmentichnus mohri”, discovered in 2010. This special combination of natural landscape and geological history offers a perspective on the area that goes beyond its hiking trails.

Hiking Trails with Different Starting Points

The Nordhalben Border Trail is an easy 4.3-kilometre hiking trail in Nordhalben. Its length and stated difficulty make it easy to factor into your day’s plans. If you are interested in a longer hiking route, you will also find the FrankenwaldSteig in Nordhalben: its second stage starts on Amlichstraße, not far from the lace-making museum.

Another trail is the FrankenwaldSteigla “Through the Bärwurzwiesen”. It starts at the car park of the nature adventure pool on the edge of Nordhalben. This is distinct from the “Through the Bärwurzwiesen” hiking trail, which follows the Green Belt and crosses the plateau. When choosing a hike, it is therefore worth checking the full name and the route description.

The Nordhalben Sculpture Trail also leads into the border area: it follows the old Badweg into the Green Belt, where the border between Bavaria and Thuringia once ran. The different trails let you tailor your stay to your interests—for example, a shorter, easy walk or an outing connected with border history.

Local History and Bobbin Lace

The Nordhalben Historical Local Museum displays exhibits on the town’s history in seven rooms arranged by theme. These include a faithfully recreated kitchen and bedroom. The museum is housed in the lace-making school, which also features a border history exhibition. The lace-making school is also home to the International Lace Collection, an exhibition of European standing.

Another cultural destination is the Nordhalben Artists’ House, also known as “Maxhaus”. It was renovated to serve as a residence and workplace for artists. The Evangelical Jubilate Church was built between 1925 and 1926 and renovated in 1997. If you are looking for a quiet place, you can visit the Chapel of the Visitation of Mary, popularly known as the Marienkapelle, which is open during the day for visitors to explore and spend time in.

Excursions and Getting Your Bearings Locally

From May to October, Nordhalben’s cross-border network of cycle and hiking buses can take you to destinations in the surrounding Franconian-Thuringian area. For a ride on a heritage railway, the Rodachtalbahn offers a route through the Rodach Valley. The listed Nordhalben railway station has a beer garden, and a small selection of meals is available in the dining car.

Whether you would like to spend your stay hiking, taking in the scenery or learning about local history, Nordhalben’s trails, museum and border area offer different starting points for your trip.
