Schonungen offers a range of ways to enjoy nature, outdoor activities and culture. The Main Cycle Route runs directly through the municipality, while a well-signposted network of cycling and hiking trails and the Three Valleys Trail invite you to explore the area along different routes. The Schonungen coves also offer a nature reserve, and Mainberg provides historical sights. This gives you specific experiences to choose from when deciding what to focus on during your holiday, rather than a single, predefined itinerary.

Cycling and hiking trails with changing landscape views

Schonungen has a well-signposted network of cycling and hiking trails, with opportunities for extended walks and bike tours. The Mill Trail and the Apple Trail are two of the named routes. The Main Cycle Route also runs directly through the municipality, adding to the options for anyone planning to explore by bike. These different trail names give cyclists and hikers concrete starting points for planning their own excursions.

The Three Valleys Trail is a special route. It leads from the Main Valley and the small Schweinfurt suburb of Mainberg through the Meerbach, Hausen and Wollenbach valleys to the Schweinfurt Uplands. From the ridges between the valleys, there are numerous panoramic views towards the Steigerwald, the Haßberge and Thuringia, as well as across the Main Valley. The trail thus links valleys and ridges with views in several directions. Anyone who enjoys changing scenery along the way will find a different landscape here from the one along the Main Valley.

The Main as a waterway

The landing stages are also part of Schonungen’s connection with the water. In AlbanPark, a boat landing stage provides access to the important Main waterway. This is distinct from the landing stage in Mainberg, which makes the municipality part of the “main wasserwandern” canoe trail. Alongside its cycling and hiking options, the municipality therefore also has connections to waterways. The two landing stages are in different locations and each is linked to a separate offering.

Mainberg: village character, church, castle and pharmacy museum

In Mainberg, the small Schweinfurt suburb, the old centre combines pretty half-timbered houses with the castle to create an attractive village setting. Mainberg Castle is considered a landmark of the region and one of its most significant buildings for its architecture, history and location. It is also known as the Franconian “Neuschwanstein Castle”, has around 5,000 square metres of living space and 50 rooms, and is one of the largest historic monuments in northern Bavaria.

The village’s history also includes St Michael’s Church, built by Anton von Brun in 1486. The Small Pharmacy Museum focuses on a different story: it shows how pharmacists made medicines individually before the advent of industrial mass production. The museum can be visited by appointment, including in combination with a visit to the apothecary garden. Those interested in the history of buildings and in how medicines used to be made will find a range of cultural topics in Mainberg.

Nature experiences and choosing what to focus on during your holiday

The FFH and bird protection areas in the Schonungen coves on the left bank of the Main now form a nature reserve. Another way to experience nature is at the Reichelshof Nature and Environmental Garden, where children, young people and adults can engage all their senses and contribute to shaping their environment sustainably. This broad appeal is particularly interesting for families, while the trails and Mainberg’s cultural attractions cater to other interests.

When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Schonungen, what matters most is the kind of stay you are looking for.
