Churches, gates and distinctive buildings

St. Martin’s Parish Church was built according to plans by Baroque architect Leo von Kleinze (1784–1864). It has a much older church tower, which is visible from afar as a landmark of the market town. The church and its tower give Eggolsheim a widely recognisable point of reference. Another religious landmark is the Trinity Chapel on Bammersdorfer Straße.

The Hirtentor, also known as the Forchheimer Tor, also tells the story of the town: after the fire of 1684, it was rebuilt as a gatehouse. The restored gate now houses a restaurant. The old town hall is another of Eggolsheim’s sights. The very well-preserved Schleuse 94 lock lies within the market town’s boundaries. It is the only one of the 100 former locks on the old Ludwig Canal that can be walked through. The canal ran from Kelheim on the Danube to Bamberg on the Main. The remains of Schleuse 94 are now an industrial monument of European importance, dating from the first half of the 19th century. Walking and cycling tours

For a tour with several stops, Tour 1 runs from Eggolsheim via Schirnaidel, Schießberg and the Lias-Grube, then back again. It is about 8.5 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours of walking. Tour 2 starts at Eggolsheim town hall, goes to Schleuse 94 and Neuses a. d. Regnitz, and returns to the starting point. This circular route covers about 8 kilometres and takes approximately two hours of walking. Cyclists can also connect to a wider network: the canal and valley route of the RegnitzRadWeg runs through the Regnitz Valley. It connects with national and international cycle routes. Near Eggolsheim, the Lias-Grube Environmental Education Centre offers nature walks and excursions for children and adults. Its 17-hectare outdoor site is a restored former clay pit.
