The Devil’s Cave lies in the Franconian Switzerland-Franconian Jura Nature Park. A guided tour takes about 45 minutes and includes around 400 steps. These details help you plan your visit as part of your day. The Sophien Cave can also be combined with a cultural outing: guided tours take place there every day. From April to October, there are also cave concerts, including the Saturday evening event “Sophie at night,” from 6 to 9 pm.
If you prefer spending time outdoors, the region has more than 4,000 kilometres of marked hiking trails. The range of options also includes themed walks, cycling tours and mountain-biking routes. The “Pottenstein – Dream Tour at Schöngrundsee” passes juniper heathland with distinctive rock formations. Climbing parks and canoe trips on the Wiesent are also among the possible activities. This lets you take different interests into account when planning days out together, without having to stick to just one way of exploring the area.
Castles, basilica and regional traditions
Franconian Switzerland has more than 35 medieval castles and palaces. Rabenstein Castle was first mentioned in an official document in 1188. Its 64-hectare nature reserve is home to its own dripstone cave, a falconry and a castle tavern. Another cultural centre is the Basilica of Gößweinstein: built between 1730 and 1739, it is considered a sacred masterpiece by Balthasar Neumann and one of the most significant examples of late Baroque architecture in Franconia. Together with the pilgrimage, it forms the religious centre of Franconian Switzerland. Guided tours, including tours with an organ concert, take place regularly in the basilica.
The Franconian Switzerland Museum in Tüchersfeld features an original synagogue dating from 1763. Regional cultural heritage also includes numerous historic mills and the increasingly rare Lindenkirchweihen (linden-tree church fairs). At Easter, more than 200 fountains are decorated: greenery and thousands of hand-painted eggs transform fountains and springs into seasonal attractions.
Cherry blossoms and Franconian specialities
Germany’s largest contiguous sweet-cherry-growing area lies at the foot of the Walberla. The cherry trees blossom in April and May, adding a seasonal highlight to your holiday plans. Depending on the season, apples, pears, damsons and cherries are sold directly from farms. The region is also shaped by its brewing and distilling traditions: Franconian Switzerland has one of the highest densities of breweries and distilleries in the world.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding which experiences matter most for your trip: caves and culture, hiking and cycling, or activities on the Wiesent. The “Prince-Bishop’s Cycle Tour” is 204 kilometres long and combines nature with the cultural treasures left behind by the prince-bishops in Franconian Switzerland. “Casanova’s Ride” is a 184-kilometre cycle tour through romantic river valleys, following in Casanova’s footsteps. Sections of the long-distance Franconian Way, “from the Rennsteig to the Swabian Alb,” also pass through Franconian Switzerland. For cycling, in addition to these two routes, there is the “Castle Road” long-distance cycle route and more than a dozen other long-distance cycling routes.
Franconian Switzerland is connected to the A9 Munich–Berlin and A73 Nuremberg–Bamberg motorways. According to tourist information, it is about a half-hour drive from Nuremberg International Airport.
