Landscape and excursions

The low mountain landscape between the ranges of the Fichtel Mountains and the Steinwald shapes the surrounding area. Marktredwitz is also a starting point for excursions, hikes and cycling tours in the Upper Palatinate Forest and neighbouring Bohemia. Which direction suits your stay depends on the landscape you’d like to explore. Auenpark also offers a chance to spend time outdoors: you can picnic by Lake Auensee and stroll along flowerbeds. The viewing platform “Überschaubar” is located on the boiler house of the former Benker textile factory. From there, you can see across Lake Auensee to the neighbouring MAKBAD natural outdoor swimming pool. The boiler house’s former use and its current role as a viewpoint give this place a distinctive character.

Getting here and getting around town

Marktredwitz has direct access to the A 93 motorway and is also an important railway junction on the Nuremberg–Cheb and Munich–Hof routes. This may influence your choice of destination if you plan to travel by car or train. The town centre is just a few minutes’ walk from the main railway station. Two long-distance cycling routes pass through Marktredwitz: the “Danube–Naab–Saale” and the “Main–Eger–Elbe”. The Goldsteig trail starts at the Three-Arch Bridge in Marktredwitz’s Auenpark; its first stage runs from Marktredwitz to Friedenfels. This gives you different options for planning your day: a cycling trip along one of the long-distance routes or starting out on the first stage of the Goldsteig. During the summer months, roughly from April to October, the Tourist Information Centre rents out high-quality CUBE e-mountain bikes and e-touring bikes.

Egerland culture in Marktredwitz

The Egerland Cultural Centre is dedicated to preserving Egerland traditions. The building houses the Egerland Museum, the Egerland Art Gallery, the Museum Café, the town library and the office of the Euregio Egrensis Working Group Bavaria. The permanent exhibition at the Egerland Museum presents life, history and culture in the Egerland region. The art gallery displays a collection of works by artists from the Egerland who have a strong connection to their homeland.

There is also a link to regional culture outside the building: the Egerland Fountain stands on the grounds. Its four levels depict an Egerland peasant wedding. If you’re planning a stay focused on culture and regional traditions, the cultural centre offers several different insights in one place.

Nativity scene traditions and Advent

The Marktredwitz Nativity Scene Trail runs through the town and its districts. Along the way, the “Kripperer” open their homes to visitors, share anecdotes and often display Marktredwitz landscape nativity scenes that fill an entire room. This nativity scene tradition has been included in Bavaria’s state register of “Intangible Cultural Heritage”. The trail brings together stories and individually designed nativity scenes, offering a special way to discover local traditions.

The Marktredwitz Advent Magic is also part of the town’s offerings during Advent. The Christmas market takes place from late November to late December, Thursday to Sunday, at the atmospheric Glasschleif venue, illuminated with festive lighting. Its described features include decorated stalls, live music and shows that change daily, activities for children and food and drink. If you plan to visit at this time of year, these events can add to your stay.
