Röttenbach: Paths through the landscape and local history

Since 2011, the 146-kilometre-long “Der Seenländer” hiking trail has passed through the municipality of Röttenbach. It connects Lake Altmühlsee with Lake Brombachsee and Lake Rothsee. For those interested in longer hikes, the Seenländer provides a clear point of reference for planning: Röttenbach lies on a route that connects three lakes by name.

The Röttenbach Keuper Trail has a different focus. This approximately ten-kilometre geological and geographical nature trail passes through the municipality’s distinctive natural landscapes and includes eleven stations in total. The geological nature trail has seven information panels; the longer loop has eight. The route can therefore be understood in terms of its approximate length, its natural history focus and the number of stations. Historic buildings in Röttenbach

In the old town centre, the restored rectory dating from 1718 is considered a landmark. Another important historic building is the old forester’s lodge: it was built between 1723 and 1740 as a stately bailiff’s and treasury house for administering the town. The two buildings tell different parts of the town’s history – the rectory shapes the character of the old town centre, while the forester’s lodge, with its former administrative role, offers a glimpse into how the town was organised when it was built.

The region’s network of cycling and hiking trails stretches from the Aischgrund to the Erlanger Oberland. Regional nature highlights include the Weihergebiet bird sanctuary near Mohrhof, an Important Bird Area and one of the early Natura 2000 Special Areas of Conservation and Special Protection Areas. Wetlands and orchid-rich hay meadows are among the habitats found there. Culinary traditions also add their own regional character: the Aischgründer Spiegelkarpfen, or Aischgrund mirror carp, is a speciality in Höchstadt a.d.Aisch.
