The Fahrtbach Valley is the most important component of a biotope network and lies within the Tandern project area. It is a habitat for many birds and mammals. So the nature theme encompasses not only the trail itself, but also a landscape area that is significant to the biotope network.

The BesteGegendPfad offers a practical way to include the valley in your tour plans. Its extended route leads into nature and to the Fahrtbach Valley, adding another 2.5 kilometres to the six-kilometre circular route. An alternative route into the Fahrtbach Valley is also incorporated into the trail. If you plan to take the extension, check the signs on site. This lets you tailor the tour to your preferred distance without assuming a particular duration.

The “StreuobstErlebnis” (orchard experience) is also part of the BesteGegendPfad. The fruit-growing and gardening association created it on the compensatory land of the newly opened fire station. The extension to the Fahrtbach Valley and the orchard experience represent different nature themes along the BesteGegendPfad.

Historic traces and film connections

History is also part of the BesteGegendPfad: the Vollmairhaus in Tandern is one of the historic buildings along the route. At the time, it was undergoing restoration. In the vicinity of Tandern, the Daumillerberg recalls a different kind of local history. In the 1950s and 1960s, it served as a hill for learning to ski; it was also a “cult site” in Rosenmüller’s film “Beste Gegend.” History here brings together a historic building along the trail and memories of winter sports and film.

Another active option is the extension of the Ilmtal Tour: it runs from Jetzendorf via Hilgertshausen and Tandern to Altomünster station, and includes a detour to the source of the Tanderner Ilm. This also lets you plan your trip around a cycling route that connects several named places. Check the latest route information before setting off. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether a tour on the BesteGegendPfad or the longer cycling route is a better fit for your planned days.

Karlsfelder See lies right next to the built-up area of northern Karlsfeld, covers 58.2 hectares and is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling and recreation. This differs from the focus of the Fahrtbach Valley: here, the focus is a lake with a variety of year-round activities, while there it is a habitat within a biotope network. The approximately 2.5-kilometre “Lebensader Maisach” (“Maisach Lifeline”) trail follows the river and is accessible to people with disabilities from Bergkirchen or Günding. Cultural attractions are also part of the wider Dachau travel region. On the Petersberg near Erdweg stands a Romanesque basilica, built in 1104 and preserved to this day. A 200-metre-long sculpture trail runs through Petersberg Forest, with ten works of art at eight stops. These offer two different ways to explore history and art: preserved Romanesque architecture and a short trail featuring outdoor artworks. Another cultural option is the permanent exhibition at the Altomünster Museum, which presents the history of the Bridgettine Order in Europe and its founder, Saint Bridget of Sweden. It also covers the example of the now-closed Altomünster monastery, which had existed for 500 years.
