Weitramsdorf brings together a striking village church, hiking destinations and Tambach Wildlife Park. From the Schwarze Heide viewpoint, the view stretches across Weitramsdorf and Weidach to Veste Coburg; in Tambach, a Baroque palace and the wildlife park are set in the palace grounds. These varied experiences give your trip more than one focus: architecture and local history, a hike with a view, or time with the animals.

St. Nicholas Church: architecture and local history

St. Nicholas Church in Weitramsdorf is a hall church with a roof turret and an attached sacristy. The interior includes two levels of galleries and a wooden pulpit by sculptor Karl Groß. The church’s name also points to the history of the surrounding area: St. Nicholas recalls the former church in Schlettach, which served as a parish church from the Reformation until the Thirty Years’ War. This brings together the building’s design, its furnishings and a historical connection in a single visit.

For step-free access, take the route via the cemetery. This access is suitable for wheelchairs and walking frames, but it is quite steep; the route through the cemetery is somewhat difficult. Check the route conditions before your visit and take this information into account when planning.

Hikes with views of the Schwarze Heide

The “Around Weitramsdorf (Part 1)” circular hiking trail leads to the Schwarze Heide. From there, you can enjoy a wide view across the municipality; on a clear day, it extends across Weitramsdorf and Weidach to Veste Coburg. A separate two-hour hike, “Schwarze Heide,” starts in Weitramsdorf and initially follows a former church path to the viewpoint. The estimated time helps you plan this route as a longer part of your hike. If you would rather make a viewpoint than a building your destination, the Schwarze Heide makes a distinctive focus for your stay. Route conditions can change.

Palace and wildlife park in Tambach

A Baroque palace is located in the district of Tambach. Tambach Wildlife Park lies within the 50-hectare palace grounds. Animals living there include wolves, lynxes, moose and raccoons. Tambach therefore offers two distinct interests side by side: architecture and landscape on the one hand, and animals on the other. If you enjoy shaping your holiday around themes like these, you can consider which focus would best complement your trip when choosing a holiday apartment—without having to dedicate an entire day of your holiday to it.

Traces of local traditions

Even smaller landmarks in the village tell stories of local traditions. The wayside cross on the pavement in Weitramsdorf’s Thüringer Viertel points to another legend. Near Weitramsdorf, the Dreiherrensteine offer a different historical perspective: they symbolise the boundary settlement between the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg and the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg in the 1599 Trappstadt Agreement. Together with the memory of the former parish church in Schlettach, these connections offer different ways of exploring local and regional history.

More to explore in the wider Coburg destination

Looking beyond Weitramsdorf to the wider Coburg destination reveals additional cultural and landscape attractions. The Museum of the German Toy Industry in Neustadt bei Coburg tells the story of the German toy industry, from home-based work to factory production. Its international collection of traditional costume dolls comprises around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries. In Ahorn, the Alte Schäferei displays tools from farming and crafts, painted furniture and other evidence of the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. For a different kind of outing, the Panoramaweg in Ahorn is 7 kilometres long; the stated walking time is 1.5 to 2 hours, and the route is suitable for pushchairs. These places and attractions are not features of Weitramsdorf itself.

Weitramsdorf suits a range of travel interests: you can focus on time spent hiking and enjoying the views, explore the church and local traditions, or make the wildlife park in Tambach a destination in its own right. Which holiday apartment is right for you depends on which of these aspects of the destination you want to shape your trip.
