Stein Castle: Castle Complex and Brewing Tradition

Stein Castle on the Traun comprises three parts: the upper castle, the cave castle or rock castle, and the still-inhabited castle. The cave castle is considered the largest and best-preserved of its kind in Germany. Its interior can only be accessed with a castle guide. If you would like to explore the complex in more detail, you can combine a guided tour of the cave castle with a tour of the Stein Castle Brewery.

For more than 530 years, the castle brewery has been producing beer and organic beer specialities and offers tours. The castle complex also includes the Hermit's Retreat, which opens to visitors once a year on the parish fair Sunday. This single opening day is important to bear in mind when planning your trip. A castle tour, a brewery visit and the rare opportunity to see the retreat are different reasons to discover Stein an der Traun.

History and Art in the City

The Traunreut History Trail tells the story of the development of the “Muna” munitions factory in the 1940s into the present-day town of Traunreut. The trail can be walked year-round; guided tours can be booked through the town hall on request. At 8.8 kilometres, the town trail offers impressions of the young town and the surrounding landscape. Individual sites also offer insight into Traunreut’s cultural diversity. In addition to the town’s history, the local history museum documents the history of the regions from which Traunreut’s residents came. At the town hall fountain stands “Flute Player”, a bronze sculpture by Munich sculptor Marlene Neubauer-Woerner. The pilgrimage chapel of Frauenbrunn in Traunwalchen has artistically designed altar and votive panels. Notable churches and chapels in the town also include the Catholic church in Irsing and St. Michael’s Castle Chapel in Stein an der Traun. The Romanian Orthodox church, in turn, is an example of the town’s cultural diversity.

Exploring on Foot or by Bike

For a walk through the countryside, a scenic hiking route follows the gently flowing Traun from Stein an der Traun to Altenmarkt. The town trail offers a different perspective: it combines impressions of the young town with the surrounding landscape and, at 8.8 kilometres, is a clearly defined option for your day’s plans.

The Traunreut cycling trail is divided into five sections, each between 8 and 14 kilometres long. The route passes through unspoilt villages and hamlets and through the scenic Traun Valley along the Traun. You can consider the sections as different options for a cycling trip and take their lengths into account when planning. Traunreut is connected to the southeastern Bavarian rail network by regular services; bicycles can usually be carried free of charge on regional trains. This may be useful if you are travelling with a bike or combining a train journey with a cycling trip.

Events and Special Traditions

The k1 Culture and Events Centre offers a varied programme of more than 200 events. These include concerts, cabaret, theatre performances, talks, congresses, conferences and balls at the k1. The Theaterfabrik complements the cultural programme with a theatre café, a black box and an auditorium for concerts, films, theatre, open-stage events and cabaret. In Traunreut, you can therefore find different kinds of events, from stage arts to conferences.

One special tradition is the Georgiritt, a pilgrimage procession between Stein an der Traun and St. Georgen. Every year, thousands of spectators line the streets for the procession. Highlights include decorated horses and carriages, historic costumes and traditional attire. If you are interested in regional traditions, this event offers a different way to experience the area than its town history, museums or cultural programme.
