Town Square, Town Wall and Museum

The 298-meter-long town square is a cohesive historic ensemble, with colorful facades in the regionally distinctive Inn-Salzach style. Another defining feature is the almost completely preserved town wall dating from the mid-13th century: stretching 1,700 meters, it encloses Tittmoning’s town center and castle. Together, the square and wall give the historic town center a distinctive character.

The Rupertiwinkel Museum is housed in 23 historic exhibition rooms with original floors and ceilings from the 17th century. Exhibits include prehistoric and early historic finds, as well as regional folk art. The museum also preserves 130 Tittmoning shooting targets dating from 1600 to 1930. A cultural visit therefore offers both finds from earlier periods and evidence of regional traditions.

The tannery museum, located in the former Marstall building of the Troadkasten, offers a different way to learn about history. It documents the history of tanning in Tittmoning and is designed as an interactive, hands-on museum: visitors learn by touching and trying things out for themselves. This makes it a different kind of museum visit from viewing the exhibition rooms and displays at the Rupertiwinkel Museum.

Castle Tours and Arts and Crafts

Public tours of Tittmoning Castle, including the Rupertiwinkel Museum, take place from May 1 to October 3, Thursday through Sunday at 2 p.m. They last about 1.5 hours; advance booking is not required. You can factor this regular time into your day’s plans if you want a guided tour to be part of your stay.

The Colloredo Market is also part of the town’s cultural calendar: since 2011, it has been held every year in April as a two-day arts and crafts market in the historic castle complex. It adds a seasonal highlight alongside the historic buildings that define the town year-round. Because the market takes place in April, it offers a different occasion to visit from the castle tours, which run from May 1 to October 3.

Salzach Floodplain and Riverside Experiences

The Salzach floodplain near Tittmoning is part of the FFH site 7744-371, “Salzach and Lower Inn,” and belongs to the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The river landscape can be experienced in different ways: the floodplain circular trail leads from the landing stage for Plätten boats through the natural landscape along the Salzach. Plätten boat trips depart from the landing stage by the Tittmoning Salzach Bridge in the floodplain and travel downstream on the Salzach toward Burghausen. A route through the floodplain and a trip on the river are two distinct experiences.

Tittmoning-Wiesmühl railway station is about 7 kilometers from the town center and is connected by a signposted cycling route. The distance to the town center is a specific factor to consider when planning your journey; the cycling route may be relevant if you are bringing a bicycle. No travel times or other connections are specified.
