Experience the shore and nature

The eastern shore of Lake Chiemsee near Chieming includes a flat, freely accessible stretch of shore about 6 km long. If you enjoy walking, you will also find several signposted Nordic walking routes laid out as circular tours, some of which run along the lakeshore. The available activities therefore vary: a lakeside walk offers a different focus from a marked circular route.

A special place to observe nature is the Chieming nature observation platform. It is accessible to all and freely open to the public. From there, you can see Lake Chiemsee and the Chiemgau Alps, while also observing native birds. If you would like to combine scenery with wildlife watching, you can plan a visit as a separate activity. The platform offers another perspective on the lake and its surroundings, in addition to the views on hikes along the eastern shore.

Village history and rural life

The historical village walk begins at the Chieming local history museum, follows the shore of Lake Chiemsee for a short distance and returns to the village center. This easy walk combines cultural highlights with an attractive landscape. Along the way, the route passes Hofmark Castle Neuenchieming, the former seat of the Hofmark, and the parish church of the Assumption of Mary. The historical features mentioned there include Roman stones, tombs of the Hofmark lords and votive tablets.

Other stops offer insights into different chapters of the village’s history: Dannervilla was built in 1901. At Schlosserhäusl, the walk passes a former mill and the first power station. The route is suitable for anyone who wants to get to know Chieming not only as a starting point for outdoor experiences, but also through its architectural and local history.

A museum in the local history museum displays exhibits on early history. The exhibition also shows how flax was processed into linen and how milk was used on the farm. It conveys the realities of rural life and work. This offers a different way to explore the past than the village walk: the focus here is on early finds and everyday farm activities.

Active on the water and by bike

Chieming offers opportunities for surfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. These different water sports may be worth considering if you would like to spend your time on Lake Chiemsee actively. If you prefer to cover longer distances on land, several cycle routes pass through Chieming: the Benediktweg, the Mozartradweg, the Via Julia and the Chiemsee circular cycling route. The Chiemsee Cycle Route is about 63 km long and goes around the lake.

For excursions beyond the lakeshore, passenger boats run from Chieming to Fraueninsel from May to September. The onward journey to Herreninsel takes about 10 minutes, and the journey to Prien takes 15 minutes. On the return, the service runs from Herreninsel via Fraueninsel and Chieming to Seebruck. This makes it possible to include a boat trip in your holiday plans; the journey times given help distinguish between the island and lake destinations.

Places and routes for planning your holiday

For on-demand journeys, there is the Traudl Rufbus. It takes passengers flexibly and individually from A to B in Chieming, Grabenstätt, Übersee and Grassau. The start, destination and travel time can be chosen without a fixed timetable. The Rufbus also helps you travel from Chieming to the Chiemgau Alps, where you can start hikes directly. At the Haus des Gastes Chieming, you will find a tourist information office with maps, tips and services; there are also exhibition spaces, accessible facilities and insights into culture and history.

Depending on whether you want to focus on lakeside paths, village history, water sports or cycling tours, Chieming may appeal to different holiday interests. Other places to consider: Altenmarkt an der Alz, Reit Im Winkl, Nußdorf, Petting, Inzell, Waldhausen, Traunstein, Grabenstätt.
