Weigendorf offers several points of interest to consider when planning your holiday: a Kneipp pool with a rest area and sun loungers, the prominent dolomite rock known as “Old Fritz,” a landmark of Haunritz, and the Ore Trail, whose circular route passes through Weigendorf on its way back to Hartmannshof. This means a place to take a break, a distinctive landscape feature and a route connected to mining history are all close at hand. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Rest area, landmark and circular route

Weigendorf’s Kneipp pool has a rest area and sun loungers. This gives your visit a dedicated place to unwind: you can plan a break around the facility rather than organising your stay solely around a route. If you plan to visit, it is advisable to check the facility’s current status beforehand.

The “Old Fritz” is a dolomite rock and the prominent landmark of Haunritz, a district of Weigendorf. It gives the landscape a clearly identifiable point of reference. The rock and the Kneipp pool represent different aspects of the area: one is a striking natural feature, the other a facility with a place to rest. You can take both into account when deciding whether Weigendorf is the right holiday destination for you, without assuming they promise the same kind of stay.

The Ore Trail also passes through Weigendorf. Its circular route goes through the town and returns to Hartmannshof. Across the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination, the Ore Trail connects sites with a mining tradition spanning more than 1,000 years and passes through cultural and natural landscapes. This places the local route in a broader thematic context: mining history and landscape are both part of the trail’s story.

More themes across the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination

Beyond Weigendorf, the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination offers a range of landscapes and activities. Its hiking landscapes include imposing limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and picturesque river valleys. One specific example is the Felsenweg: this 2.7-kilometre hike leads from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher and across an impressive rocky landscape. The stated walking time is about 45 minutes. The distance and approximate walking time give you a clear idea of what to expect if you are looking for a well-described, manageable route for a day’s hiking.

If you would like to include a different kind of activity, consider the Bow-Vision 3D course near Wolfertsfeld in the wider destination. Here you can try traditional archery on a circular course of about three kilometres through the farm woodland typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura. This is a distinct activity alongside hiking and observing nature.

The Theuern nature observation platform was built on the edge of the settling ponds at the Theuern wastewater treatment plant. In the adjacent wetland, with the Vils River, its former channels and ponds, local birds and birds migrating from the north find places to rest and nest throughout the year. Nature observation thus adds an option for a quieter experience focused on the landscape and birdlife.

Culture can also be planned as a focus in its own right: the East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum at Theuern Cultural Castle researches and documents mining and industry in eastern Bavaria, keeping their history alive. Since 2023, Kirwan celebrations in the Amberg-Sulzbach region have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. They are held every year in the respective town and are open to visitors as well as local residents. Since each celebration takes place in a specific town, it is worth checking the relevant date when planning your trip.
