Cycling routes through Amberg and the region
The approximately 300 km Five Rivers Cycle Route forms a loop and follows the Pegnitz, Vils, Naab, Danube and Altmühl rivers. Amberg lies along this route, and you can join it at any point. Its approximate total length and flexible starting points are useful things to bear in mind if you want to make cycling the focus of your holiday.
Another option is the approximately 140 km Bavarian Iron Route. It runs from Pegnitz to Regensburg via Amberg and links former iron-producing centres in the region. From Amberg, the cycle route follows a historic waterway along the Vils, Naab and Danube rivers to Regensburg. The routes offer different themes: the Five Rivers Cycle Route follows five rivers, while the Iron Route is connected with the region’s former industrial history.
City history, walls and museums

The Amberg City Museum explores the various facets of the city’s history across approximately 1,800 m². The ALTE FEUERWACHE City Gallery in the City Museum has approximately 170 m² of space dedicated to fine art. Its focus is contemporary art from Eastern Bavaria, with around four changing exhibitions held there each year. The Glass Cathedral offers a different perspective on Amberg: built between 1968 and 1970, the building is now the Kristall-Glasfabrik Amberg GmbH and is considered the only building by Walter Gropius in the Upper Palatinate, as well as his last work. A guided multimedia show in the exhibition room traces the building’s development from its beginnings in the 1960s to the present day.
Water, views and special experiences
Historic flatboat trips take you along the water through Amberg and beneath the Stadtbrille, the historic water gate. Amberg has a brewing tradition that dates back centuries and is carried on by six breweries. At the Winkler family brewery, a tour of the historic brewhouse is part of the experience. Actors recreate scenes from 400 years of brewing history. The experience also includes a small beer tasting, followed by a beer carter’s meal with a starter and main course, either at Winkler BräuWirt or Schießl Wirtshaus.
