Churches shape the historic landscape

The parish church of St. Nicholas stands on a hill and is considered the city’s centrepiece and landmark; it also appears on the city’s coat of arms. It was built in 1730/31 on the site of a late Gothic predecessor. Its interior consists of a single-nave hall with a recessed choir. The ceiling paintings by the artists Bergmüller and Albrecht define the space. For those interested in cultural history, St. Nicholas offers tangible points of interest: its architectural history, layout and artistic design.

In Leitershofen, the Baroque church of St. Oswald stands on Kirchberg, slightly above the original town centre. The Füssen master builder Johann Georg Fischer designed the building, which was completed in 1732. In 1928, the church was extended by one bay; an extensive restoration followed from 1979 to 1983. St. Oswald has no longer been a parish church since 1970. The rosary is prayed there regularly and an evening Mass is celebrated; weddings and funeral services are also held in the church. The building’s history and its present-day religious use offer a different perspective from that of the parish church of St. Nicholas.

Discover art and collections

A special collection is devoted to reverse glass painting: Since 2006, the Hilda Sandtner Foundation’s permanent exhibition “Art Behind Glass” has been housed at the Dr. Georg Frank Altenhilfe Foundation in Stadtbergen. It features 63 international exhibits spanning four centuries, from the 17th to the 20th century. Its broad time span makes the exhibition a destination for anyone interested in different periods of this art form.

Those seeking contemporary art will find a dedicated focus at the Kunstraum Am Pfarrhof Leitershofen. It exhibits painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and photography. The sculpture park on August-Abenstein-Weg presents participants in the final round of the Bavarian-wide Stadtbergen Sculpture Art Prize every three years. Stadtbergen thus brings different art forms together: a historical collection, rotating sculpture presentations at the stated intervals, and a space for contemporary works.

BlechRoller – The Museum in Leitershofen also offers a distinctive attraction. It displays tin scooters from five decades, twelve nations and 25 manufacturers. The collection is complemented by literature, first-hand accounts, documents and collectors’ items from scooter clubs around the world. The museum appeals not only to people interested in vehicles, but also to visitors who would like to explore the history of a distinctive collecting passion through documents and collectors’ items.

Active days and choosing a base

Stadtbergen also offers several ways to stay active: there is a pump track for mountain bikes and skateboards, a Kneipp facility and a 9-hole golf course. Each of these activities suits different interests. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider whether art and history, tin scooters or an active pursuit should play a bigger part in your stay.

Transport links can also influence your choice of location. Tram lines 2 and 6, as well as various bus routes operated by the Augsburg Transport Company, serve large parts of Stadtbergen.
