Thannhausen: Church Art, City Walk and Water Sports
Accommodation in Thannhausen
Thannhausen combines Baroque church art and historic buildings with an art trail through the town and water sports at Turncable Wakepark. These different highlights offer various ways to shape your trip: you can explore the buildings and works of art, plan the Brenninger Trail as a city walk, or focus on wakeboarding and water skiing. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth first considering which of these interests you want to shape your days.
Church Art and Local History
The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1742 by Thannhausen church architect Johann Kaspar Radmiller. Its Baroque hall contains frescoes by J. Christ and changing main altarpieces by Franz Xaver Abele. There are also side altarpieces by Konrad Huber, a Crucifixion painting by L. Hundertpfund and the choir stalls by Thannhausen master carpenter Ferdinand Zech. In this one church, you will encounter works by several artists and a design that offers a particular focus for travelers interested in Baroque art.
Among the town’s oldest buildings is St. Leonhard’s Chapel at the eastern entrance to the town; it dates from around 1600. Since 1901, the square in front of the town hall has been home to a monument to Christoph von Schmid, created by F. Miller. Schmid worked in Thannhausen from 1796 to 1816 as a writer, benefice holder and school director. His works include “Easter Eggs” and “Ihr Kinderlein kommet” (“Come, Little Children”). The monument and the chapel mark different periods: one commemorates a person who held several local roles, while the other points back to around 1600.
The former courthouse on Dr.-Georg-und-Lu-Zimmermann-Platz also tells the story of Thannhausen’s architectural history. It dates from 1673 and has a Baroque gable designed by Kaspar Radmiller. The Bierbrunnen fountain, designed by Thannhausen architect and town councilor Monika Wiesmüller-Schwab, stands on the same square. It is the only drinking-water fountain in Mindelstadt. Those interested in architectural forms will find two different details here: the historic gable of the former courthouse and the fountain designed by a local architect.
The local history association established a town museum in the listed Tuchmacherhaus, using exhibits collected over many years. In 1987, the town made the building available to the association for the creation of a local history museum. The museum adds a story of collecting to the town’s buildings: the exhibits were assembled over many years. During your stay, cultural interests like these may be the deciding factor if you would rather spend your time on local history and art than on an active day on the water.
City Walks, Theater and Water Sports
The Brenninger Trail is an art trail with twelve stops and also a city walk through Thannhausen. It follows the works of sculptor Georg Brenninger. The route combines walking with a clear theme: rather than viewing individual artworks in isolation, you encounter the stops as part of a walk through the town. The trail makes a great standalone activity for travelers who want to combine sculpture with a walking tour.
Burgstalltheater Burg e.V. offers a different kind of culture: every few years, the association stages a new production at the open-air theater in Burg. As performances take place at these intervals, check the announced dates before making specific travel plans.
At Turncable Wakepark in Thannhausen, you can go wakeboarding and water skiing. There is also a Flexibus stop there: Thannhausen No. 1 “Wakeboard.” Check the Flexibus’s current service information before traveling. If water sports are central to your trip, make Turncable a key part of your plans and compare the location of holiday apartments based on their specific addresses.
Planning Your Trip to Thannhausen
Thannhausen’s cultural attractions, the Brenninger Trail and the wakepark offer different ways to discover the town. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider whether you mainly want to make time for church art and historic buildings, the art walk, or wakeboarding and water skiing. If you want to combine several interests, you can decide in advance which stops and activities you want to include, then choose suitable accommodation based on your priorities.
