Königsbrunn combines regional stories with experiences in nature, water and fascinating glimpses into the past. Museums and traces of history

The Archaeological Museum focuses on finds from the southern district of Augsburg. It also displays a fully preserved skeleton with grave goods from the Bell Beaker period. By contrast, the Königsbrunn Natural History Museum turns its attention to local habitats: it showcases the Lech, the heaths, and life in and around the water and in the forest. A nine-metre-long model illustrates the Lech as a natural wild river; fish can be observed in underwater viewing areas. Different interests may determine which of the two museums you choose: archaeological finds and their regional context, or an overview of nature and habitats.

The Lechfeld Museum takes visitors through the origins of Königsbrunn in a series of themed rooms. It depicts the farming way of life, housing conditions and clothing of the settlement’s founders in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Mercateum offers a different historical perspective: the globe housed there is based on historical cartography and is considered the largest of its kind in the world. An exhibition inside covers trade in goods with India and other countries in Asia, Africa, Central America and South America. On a guided tour, you can also learn more about the creation of the globe, historical maps and the history of long-distance trade.

History is also present in the townscape: two steles mark the historical trail commemorating the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. Art lovers can visit the Gregor Kruk Gallery in the town hall foyer. It is believed to house one of the largest collections of Gregor Kruk’s works.

Heathland, paths and water

The Königsbrunner Heide is one of the few remaining parts of the Lech Valley’s Florenbrücke. It provides a habitat for migrating animal and plant species. Visitors to the heath are asked to stay on the designated paths and leave their bicycles at the edge. Walkers, joggers, inline skaters and cyclists are active in the surrounding area. If you visit the heath, you can keep this guidance in mind when planning your trip and use the designated paths.

The nature trail at Lochbach offers another perspective on nature: it is about 2.5 kilometres long and runs through a nature reserve where walkers can learn interesting facts about the natural environment. The straight embankment of the Via Claudia Augusta, visible above ground, stretches for eleven kilometres between Königsbrunn-Neuhaus and Untermeitingen. It is among the longest remaining continuous and relatively well-preserved sections of the road. Each place adds a different focus to your stay: the nature trail explores natural topics, while the embankment is a visible remnant of the historic road.

Ilsesee was formed by gravel extraction and is a closed body of water fed by groundwater that has been developed into a local recreation area. Families can swim there, and there is also a water rescue station by the lake. The lake is popular with divers thanks to its diverse underwater animal and plant life, and there is a diving centre on the eastern shore. The Park of the Senses complements the offering with an herb garden, a barefoot path and Kneipp pools; the Kneipp facilities are supplied by groundwater.
