Günzburg’s local history museum presents the city’s historical and cultural heritage across more than 600 square metres. Its collection spans prehistoric and Roman archaeology as well as everyday culture. It also includes sacred art from the Gothic period to the 19th century, religious crafts from the 18th and 19th centuries, and objects relating to the history of the town’s rulers. Günzburg and its surroundings are also reflected in the collection’s various sections. Once a month, the “Museum Thursday” event offers specially designed exclusive guided tours of the local history museum on a Thursday.

Every Tuesday since 1395, one of the region’s oldest weekly markets has been held in Günzburg’s Marktplatz. Its regular day and long history make it a special town tradition. In summer, the 250-metre stretch from the Marktplatz to the Unteres Tor becomes Swabia’s longest street café. The market tradition and summer town life thus offer two distinct impressions of Günzburg.

The Frauenkirche in Günzburg is considered a Rococo masterpiece by master builder Dominikus Zimmermann. Visitors interested in sacred art can also find artworks spanning several centuries at the local history museum. From May to December, except in August, the Frauenkirche hosts the half-hour concert series “Eine kleine Kirchenmusik” at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. This makes it possible to include an interest in architecture and church music in your itinerary without treating the two experiences as the same.

Bürgerpark and nature trails

Günzburg’s Bürgerpark was created in 1814 and is one of the early parks inspired by English landscape gardens. It has been protected as a nature reserve since its creation and is home to botanical rarities. For a more peaceful stay, the park offers opportunities for walking, jogging, reading and relaxing. These activities differ from an outing involving a longer hiking route: here, the focus is on spending time in the park, while the DonAUwald Premium Hiking Trail is designed as a multi-day route. From Günzburg’s Stadtturm, the view stretches across the Donaumoos to the Alps.

The DonAUwald Premium Hiking Trail starts at Günzburg train station and first leads through the historic Bürgerpark. Overall, it runs for around 59 kilometres in five stages between Günzburg and Schwenningen. This makes it possible to plan the trail as the focus of a multi-day hiking trip.Those who prefer cycling have a different way to explore the area: Günzburg is considered an ideal starting point for cycling tours in Bavarian Swabia and a worthwhile stop for cycle tourists on the European Danube Cycle Path.

Special experiences and ways to explore

At the Stadtturm, panoramic views meet a local dining tradition. Weißwürste, pretzels and chilled drinks are served in the Türmerstube on Tuesdays after the climb. If you enjoy a local place to eat as well as views and physical activity, you can plan this part of your stay for a Tuesday.

For those seeking a high-altitude activity, the LEGOLAND® Holiday Village is home to the Günzburg high ropes course. It offers eight courses, 42 climbing elements and a 15-metre-high climbing wall for adventurers aged four and up. At heights of up to 10 metres, there are 300-metre-long zip lines and a “Hero Jump.” The specific age and height details help you consider this as a separate excursion, rather than equating it with a walk in the Bürgerpark or a multi-day hike.
