Discover Ballooning and Culture
The Gersthofen Balloon Museum presents the history of ballooning through interactive installations, original exhibits and walk-in replicas. The different ways of presenting the subject bring it to life: original objects sit alongside hands-on installations and replicas that you can enter. Guided tours can be booked in advance at any time. The museum is also a venue for readings, lectures and exhibitions. Every two years, it hosts children’s cultural days—an event that adds a distinctive touch to Gersthofen’s cultural programme.
The Gersthofen Town Hall and its associated venues also offer plenty of opportunities for a cultural evening, hosting around 200 events a year. The programme includes comedy and cabaret, concerts ranging from classical music to jazz, pop, funk and medieval rock, as well as magic, shows, theatre and dance. The season’s programme also features family theatre and children’s musicals. A variety of performing arts come together, from music and humour to theatre and dance.
The Gersthofen waterworks are connected to the history of the Augsburg Water Management System. They are one of the 22 sites in the system, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.
Out and About on the Lech
Gersthofen lies directly on the Lech and offers local recreation areas there. Walking and cycling routes along the river cater to walkers and recreational athletes. If you would like to hike up Monte Scherbelino, you can choose from three trails. In good weather, it offers the best views of the Lech meadows, Augsburg and the wider region. Another hiking option is the Jungle Trail, which opened in 2016. Gersthofen is also part of the Western Forests Nature Park.
Activities and Getting There
For more sporty cycling, there is the Gersthofen Friends of Nature bike park, with trails, jump lines and a pump track. It is available to members of the Gersthofen Friends of Nature at all times. Membership is therefore an important distinction from the walking and cycling routes along the Lech, which are described as catering to walkers and recreational athletes.
Road access is another practical factor when planning your trip: Gersthofen is located directly on the A8. The route to the B2/B17, which is almost entirely dual carriageway, provides Gersthofen with road connections in all four cardinal directions and access to the European long-distance road network. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus while also taking Gersthofen’s road connections into account.
