Bibertal between the Osterbach and village history
Accommodation in Bibertal
Bibertal offers two different perspectives on a stay: meadows and valleys along the Osterbach and historic buildings in Silheim and Ettlishofen. The stream winds through unspoilt valleys that invite you to go for walks and cycle rides. In the villages, architectural styles range from a medieval stone cross to half-timbered houses and churches with histories spanning the 17th to 19th centuries. This lets you spend your days outdoors while discovering traces of different eras.
Walks and Cycle Route 1
The meadows and valleys along the Osterbach are unspoilt and have little infrastructure. The landscape is therefore the main focus for walks. If you would like to explore by bike, Cycle Route 1 follows a specific route: it passes through Silheim and Ettlishofen on a lightly trafficked district road through the Osterbach valley. Along the B10, it runs through Ober- and Unterfahlheim to Echlishausen and on to Bühl, which is in the neighbouring district of Günzburg. Further afield, the route passes through Hetschwang and re-enters the district of Neu-Ulm shortly before Balmertshofen. The route described therefore extends beyond Bibertal. When planning your day, you can choose between walks in the meadows and valleys and a cycle ride that crosses several villages and districts.
Half-timbered Houses, Chapels and Churches
In Silheim stands the Gasthof Zahn, a half-timbered building with a gabled roof dating from the 17th century. The Catholic Church of St Apollonia combines a late Gothic core with later alterations: it was given a Baroque makeover in the second quarter of the 18th century, and its tower dates from 1730. Silheim is also home to a wayside chapel on the road to Großkissendorf, dating from the 18th century. The half-timbered building, church and chapel each offer a different way to explore local architectural history.
Ettlishofen also brings together traces of different centuries. At Deiblerstraße 20 stands a half-timbered house from the second half of the 17th century. At the northern end of the village is a wayside chapel with historic furnishings, beside which stands a medieval stone cross. The Catholic Church of St Ulrich and St Leonhard has a late Gothic core and was remodelled in 1834. About 500 metres northeast of Ettlishofen is the Anhofer Mill, a two-and-a-half-storey building dating from the third quarter of the 19th century.
Natural Features and Further Discoveries
At the northern exit of Kissendorf stands a lime tree about 350 years old. It is 22 metres tall, its crown is 24 metres wide, and its trunk circumference is 7.20 metres. It is believed to be the second-oldest lime tree in Swabia. Another lime tree stands by the Gasthaus Rudolph in Kissendorf. North of Opferstetten, at the end of Veilchenweg, is a Roman burial ground. The tree, the landscape and the historic archaeological site each offer a different perspective on the villages.
