In Pocking, archaeological traces meet destinations by the water and in the countryside. A permanent exhibition explores the history of the Pockinger Heide, while the Roman tower offers views across the Rott Valley. The bathing lake and outdoor fitness trail add a range of ways to spend time outside.

Archaeological Traces and a Landmark

The permanent archaeological exhibition “Drehscheibe Pocking” opened in February 2007. It is located in a side room of about 75 m² in the Pocking Municipal Library. On display are finds from several excavations that followed the discovery of the local Roman settlement in 1951. The exhibition also presents traces of the Celts, Romans and Bavarians who have walked the Pockinger Heide over the past three millennia. A visit therefore connects specific finds with a long view of the area’s settlement history.

History is also present in the townscape: the “rolling mare” is a bronze statue and is considered Pocking’s unofficial landmark. Together with the exhibition, it offers two different points of interest for a stay: archaeological finds on the one hand, and a striking work in a public space on the other.

Roman Tower, Bathing Lake and Outdoor Activities

The Roman tower is around 20 metres high. From its platform, the panoramic view extends across the Rott Valley and, in Föhn conditions, as far as the Alps. If the view is what interests you, bear the weather conditions in mind: the distant view of the Alps is specifically dependent on Föhn conditions.

The bathing lake is located by the Roman tower on Füssinger Straße. It includes a 22,000 m² sunbathing lawn and a water area of about 30 ha. The two figures give a clear idea of the relative sizes: the water area is measured in hectares, while the lawn is measured in square metres. Another way to enjoy the outdoors is the outdoor fitness trail for all generations at the gravel pit lake in Schlupfing Landscape Park.

This makes it possible to include a range of interests in your trip planning: the permanent exhibition and statue add cultural and historical highlights, while the Roman tower, bathing lake and fitness trail cater to other preferences. This mix can help guide your choice of a holiday apartment in Pocking. Consider which of these themes matter most for your trip, and choose your location accordingly.

More Themes in the Wider Passau Destination

The wider Passau destination offers further cultural and landscape themes. In Tittling, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. Across 20 hectares, visitors can explore more than 100 residential and agricultural buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, blacksmiths’ workshops and chapels, as well as Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666.

The Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre offers a different focus. It is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. Ortenburg Castle’s cultural programme offers another distinct option: from April to December, the event series organised by the Förderkreis Schloss Ortenburg includes musical performances, cabaret, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, lectures and guided visits. Check the specific dates if you would like to include these events in your travel plans.

Rivers, forests and thermal baths shape the Passau region for nature and landscape enthusiasts. Thermal springs are found in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. If you prefer to explore on foot, the regional route overview includes the Granite Adventure Hiking Trail around Hauzenberg and the Smuggler’s Trail in the Danube Pearls. The Danube Cycle Path runs through the Passau region and received a 4-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Association. The wider destination therefore offers its own cultural, hiking and cycling themes alongside Pocking’s archaeological and waterside attractions.
