In the 16th century, Obernzell Castle was transformed from a simple castle into a representative Renaissance palace. In the 17th century, it temporarily served as the seat of government for the Prince-Bishops of Passau after their residence burned down. The Bavarian Danube Region Museum in the castle explores the cultural history of the Danube region: it displays around 500 objects across approximately 800 square metres. The museum opened on 17 July 2025.
Among the castle’s distinctive rooms is the Knights’ Hall, with its richly appointed Renaissance interior. Its features include a Renaissance ceiling, a frieze of popes, a wooden cornice decorated with maxims and a red marble fireplace. The windows offer views of the Danube and the historic market square. The historic market square also tells the story of different eras: its layout dates back to the 13th century; in the 19th century, the square was redesigned in the Inn-Salzach style, which has been preserved to this day. St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption offers a different impression of sacred architecture. It is designed as a cross-shaped central-plan building; its bright, spacious main room is topped by a shallow dome.
The Late Gothic St. Margaret’s Church was built in the Middle Ages and given a Baroque makeover in 1699. Today it is a cemetery church; in the past, it served as the parish church.
