Prehistory and Art at the Cordonhaus

The Cordonhaus, situated by the inner city wall, dates back to the 16th century. Its arcaded courtyard, unique in Cham, is a particular feature. Inside, the Prehistoric Exhibition shows how the prehistory and early history of the municipality of Cham and its immediate surroundings can be explored through distribution and find maps, archaeological finds and explanatory texts. This also includes evidence of the first human visits and settlement in the Cham-Further Senke. The different forms of presentation offer different ways into the subject: maps show distribution patterns, archaeological finds are material evidence, and texts explain the context.

The Cordonhaus Cham Municipal Gallery also presents art there, but with a different focus: its changing exhibitions showcase contemporary art, including works by regional artists as well as well-known artists from across Germany. Old Town and SPUR Museum

The walking tour through the historic old town offers a way to explore Cham as a city that has developed over time. The SPUR Museum presents paintings, sculptures and works on paper by the SPUR group from 1957 to 1965. The works are in the styles of Abstract Expressionism and Art Informel. The museum is housed in a Late Gothic building on the Regen, whose history dates back to the 16th century. The building was formerly the poorhouse of the city of Cham and has housed the museum since 1991. It is jointly run by the city and Cham District. The museum therefore brings together the history of the building and the art of the SPUR group, while keeping them recognisable as two distinct aspects of a visit.

The City and Landscape Around Cham
