Wiesen combines cultural history with experiences in nature: a restored hunting lodge, two differently described circular routes and a traditional private brewery give the village its own character. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether you would like to include the cultural trail, the paths around Wiesbüttsee, or both in your trip.

Hunting Lodge and Local History
The Mainz hunting lodge in Wiesen has been restored and acquired its present Renaissance appearance in 1597. It offers a tangible historical point of interest for anyone planning to include culture in their time in the village. St. James’s Church also has richly varied furnishings, including stucco ornamentation on the ceiling, ceiling paintings, Baroque altars, a baptismal font, a pulpit, various paintings, statues of saints and an organ gallery.
From Wiesen Castle, the approximately 9 km-long “Wirtschaftsstandort Wiesen” cultural trail descends into the Aubachtal nature reserve. The route also passes through the forest by Wiesener Kreuz and reaches a viewpoint at the edge of the forest. The route description thus connects the castle with a walk through woodland and countryside. An excavated 18th-century glassworks is located in the Aubachtal nature reserve. Check local trail markers and conditions before setting out.
Circular Routes around Wiesbüttsee and in the Aubachtal
Another option is the Wiesen circular route: starting at the Alte Dreschhalle, it follows a forest path to Wiesbüttsee, goes around the lake and along Wiesbüttmoor, then returns to the starting point via the Panoramaweg above Wiesen. Wiesbüttmoor, the only raised bog in the Spessart, is in neighbouring Hesse, about 3 km from Wiesen. The lake and bog give this circular route a different focus from the cultural trail, which runs from the castle into the Aubachtal.
For a longer cycling trip rather than a hike, another route description covers the 65 km Wiesbüttsee–Dammbach tour. It starts at Wiesbüttsee on the Bavarian-Hessian border, first leads through the forest above Wiesen and then descends into the village centre. Along the way, the tour follows part of the black-marked Bikewald Route A. Check current route conditions before setting off.
A Village with Brewing Heritage
The private brewery is also part of the village’s history: founded in 1888 as the Bürgerliches Brauhaus, it is still in operation and is the only private brewery in Aschaffenburg district. Wiesen’s history spans the castle’s Renaissance appearance, the 18th-century glassworks and the brewery’s founding in 1888.
