In Laufach, cultural trails, railway history and outdoor activities go hand in hand. Railway history comes to life particularly vividly at a recreational area where a former railway carriage serves as an information centre. Cultural trails lead to 19th-century historical sites and tell the story of the changes the railway brought to the Laufach Valley. You can combine these themes with cycling and hiking routes when planning your visit.

Cultural Trails Between Frohnhofen and the Railway Line

The European Cultural Trail “Revolution and Civil War” in Frohnhofen leads to historical sites dating from the 19th century. The marked trail passes the “1849 Assembly Meadow” and follows the railway line to Wendelstein Estate. Another stop is the memorial to the fallen Hessian soldiers, just behind the “Old Brewery” in Frohnhofen. Historical places and a clearly defined route are thus closely connected, without requiring you to treat the individual stops as a single site.

A second European Cultural Trail, the 14-kilometre “Spessartrampe,” follows the railway line from Laufach station to Heigenbrücken stop. Its themes include changes to the landscape around the steep-gradient railway section and the changes the railway brought to the Laufach Valley. The preserved portal of the Schwarzkopf Tunnel on the Laufach side is one of the trail’s stops. In 2018, Laufach street artist Max Hasenstab created graffiti there depicting a steam locomotive and a man with a speech bubble. The portal, mural and trail offer different starting points for an outing focused on cultural history.

Spessartrampe Railway Experience

At the Spessartrampe Railway Experience recreational area, a former Deutsche Bahn local train carriage serves as an information centre on railway history in the Laufach Valley. The topics range from the construction of the Spessartrampe around 160 years ago to the Hanau–Nantenbach high-speed rail line, with its four tunnel structures. The site also includes a GeoLodge and a rock trail, which provide information about rock samples found during tunnel construction. Visitors interested in technology and landscapes will find both subjects covered in one place.

The recreational area includes a double slide, a zip line, a Dutch disc, a play train, a table tennis table and a basketball court. Check local information before your visit, as facilities may change. A barbecue hut, a meeting area and a tent meadow offer options for day trips and events for children’s and youth groups or clubs. These group activities are therefore a distinct focus alongside the railway history attractions.

Cycling and Hiking

A fully paved, long-distance cycle route connects Laufach’s districts of Frohnhofen and Hain and runs mostly away from motor traffic. This offers a different kind of route planning from the cultural trails and their historical stops: the focus here is on connecting two districts and keeping the route largely separate from motor traffic. Check local notices for any temporary works or closures. The Spessartweg 1 and Spessartweg 2 trails also intersect in Laufach.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Laufach, consider whether cultural trails, railway history or cycling will be the main focus of your days. The cycle route between Frohnhofen and Hain offers a clearly defined route, while the cultural trails lead to different destinations and explore different themes. Choose your location based on your planned activities and compare the available holiday apartments according to your own needs.

Cycle Routes in the Wider Aschaffenburg Destination

Within the wider Aschaffenburg destination, the family-friendly MainRadweg runs through the Main Valley in the Aschaffenburg district and is well signposted. The four signposted cross-country routes of Bikewald Spessart are more demanding: they are located in the eastern High Spessart area of the district and are classified as challenging. The Kahltal-Spessart cycle route is also a signposted route through the landscapes of the Aschaffenburg district. These regional options are part of the wider Aschaffenburg destination and should be distinguished from the routes described in Laufach.
