Castles and the town’s history
The ruins also tell the story of the town. Remains of the keep at Tachenstein Castle Ruins still stand around 10 metres high. The castle was probably built in the 12th or 13th century and was already mentioned as a ruin in the 16th century. You can explore the ruins more closely on a hike along the Drei-Burgen-Steig trail. An observation platform near Tachenstein offers panoramic views of Riedenburg’s old town and the surrounding Jura hills.
Rabenstein Castle Ruins are the oldest castle complex in Riedenburg and can also be explored more closely on a hike along the Drei-Burgen-Steig trail. The “Burggraf von Riedenburg” offers a different way to discover the town’s history: this route leads through the historic old town and offers entertaining and fascinating insights. Large Baroque windows define the late-Baroque gem of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish Church; stucco ornaments frame the windows.
Hiking trails and discoveries in the Altmühltal
Those who enjoy exploring on foot can choose from a variety of described hiking experiences. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail passes through the dry gorge near Einthal. A scenic circular hiking trail runs from Riedenburg through the “Klamm und Kastlhäng” nature reserve to Prunn Castle. Sure footing is required on the section through the gorge—a key point to consider when choosing the right route.
The Altmühltal Archaeology Park can also be included in your day-trip plans: the well-signposted route is 40 kilometres long in total and includes 18 stations. It can be explored on foot or by bike; stations 8 to 15 are within the municipality of Riedenburg.
Excursions with special perspectives
In the village of Haidhof, 2 kilometres from Riedenburg, you’ll find the AltmühlBob, with a summer toboggan run over 1,000 metres long. At the Devil’s Rock in the village of Jachenhausen, weather permitting, visitors can watch hang-glider pilots take off into the Altmühltal from an 8-metre-long wooden ramp. The ramp is at 500 m above sea level; the difference in height to the valley is around 180 m. If you’d rather learn more about gemstones, the Riedenburg Crystal Museum offers special guided tours for children, explaining the world of gemstones to them.
