Roman traces in Gnotzheim

The Roman fort of Mediana was built near Gnotzheim around 90 AD. Stones from the fort were reused when St. Michael’s Parish Church was built in Gnotzheim, including a votive stone dedicated to the goddess Diana. The church was completed in 1702. Its interior stucco consists of a framework of laurel rods and other decorative mouldings. This establishes a concrete historical connection between the Roman fort and a later church building: stones from the older structure were reused in the construction of the church.
