Irsee: Monastic Heritage, Hiking Trails and a Pond

Churches, an Art Trail and Local History

Irsee’s abbey church was built between 1699 and 1703 and is now the parish church of St. Peter and Paul. Its furnishings include the Balthasar Freiwiß organ, consecrated in 1754 and considered a sound monument. Since 1993, the Swabian Academy and the parish community have regularly held organ vespers together. Another landmark church is St. Stephen’s, the Upper Church: built in 1486, its tower is considered a symbol of Irsee. The support association offers guided tours of the church and its tower for groups of up to 15 people for a donation of 20 euros.

The history of the Irsee sanatorium and nursing home is also present in the town. Behind the abbey church, the Irsee institution cemetery includes a Nazi “euthanasia” memorial and a commemorative site in the former morgue of the sanatorium and nursing home. Another way to explore the history of the monastery and village is the Kunst + Kultur Pfad (Art + Culture Trail), opened in 2015, which leads to significant sites and contemporary artworks. The circular walk through the town features 17 information boards and runs from Meinrad-Spieß-Platz to the Upper Village.

Hiking and Cycling Around Irsee

Hiking trails pass through Irsee in a variety of settings. The signposted Crescentia Pilgrimage Route runs from Kaufbeuren via Bickenried to Irsee and on to Ottobeuren. Along the way, it follows the idyllic footpath through the “Hölle” (Hell). The traditional Swabian-Allgäu long-distance hiking trail from Augsburg to Sonthofen also passes directly through Irsee. If you’re looking for a longer loop starting in town, consider the signposted Udo circular hiking trail: it passes through Pforzen and Oggenried, is about 20 kilometres long and is designed as a relaxed day hike.

For a cycling trip, there’s the “Valleys and Heights Northwest of Irsee” route. It’s about 30 kilometres long and runs from Irsee via Blöcktach, Eggenthal, Lauchdorf, Baisweil and Oggenried, before returning to Irsee. The hiking and cycling options differ both in activity and distance.

The Pond, Brewing Culture and Living Traditions

Naturally formed Oggenrieder Weiher is partly bordered by trees and reeds and is fed by the Krebsbach stream. The stream rises at the Irsee springs and flows into the Wertach. The pond covers 1.4 hectares, lies at an elevation of 728 metres on the western edge of town and is officially classified as an EU bathing water. There’s a separate paddling area for small children. Nearby, the Klosterweiher pond in the monastery forest also has a pontoon and an insect hotel.

Irsee’s brewing culture can be explored at the brewery museum, which offers a look inside the brewhouse with its copper kettles and displays historic machinery, equipment, documents, beer glasses and steins. The privately run Irsee Monastery Brewery still brews naturally crafted, traditionally brewed beer specialties such as “Urtrunk”. Local customs also include the maypole dance, a tradition maintained for decades: during the ribbon dance, primary school children dance to music, followed by a shared meal and celebration.

If you’re travelling by public transport, the recommended route is to take bus 5, 6 or 7 from the train station to the “Plärrer” bus station, then bus 26 to the “Irsee Kriegerdenkmal” stop.
