During a visit, you can learn about the region’s mining history and geology, as well as see actual finds. Admission to the museum village is free.
Another way to explore mining is the discovery tour at the Burgberg Ore Mines. A mine guide accompanies the tour through the countryside and into the historic tunnels of the Theresiengrube and Annagrube mines. Helmets and lamps are used to enter the tunnels. The tunnel entrances are about 25 metres long and lead into the original mining area. This guided tour is quite different from viewing a collection: it takes you inside the historic tunnels and gives your visit a tangible connection to mining in the past.
Hiking, Forest History and Mountain Biking
There are several reasons to spend a day hiking in Burgberg. Stage 08 of the Himmelsstürmer, a route in the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy, runs from Rettenberg via Grünten and through a dramatic gorge to Burgberg. If you choose this stage, you are planning a route that brings together several named sections and landscapes. Consider it as a hiking option if a longer route matters more to you than a single visit to a cultural site.
The Burgberg Family Hiking Trail has a different focus: it leads from the nature discovery station at the quarry to the HolzerPfad forest adventure trail, where children learn about historical work in the mountain forest. This makes the trail appealing to families who would like to combine an outing with learning about forest work in the past. You can choose this hike based on a different interest from the Himmelsstürmer stage: here, the focus is on teaching children about historical work in the mountain forest.
For mountain bikers, the Freizeit Allride Line in Burgberg is a downhill run. It offers variety, and downhill experience is an advantage on this trail. If you are planning an active holiday, you can choose between hiking and mountain biking and assess the run according to your experience. The Allride Line is a separate option for mountain bikers and does not describe the course of the hiking trails.
Getting Here and Nearby Towns
