Local and Railway History at the Local History Museum

The Buchloe Local History Museum displays exhibits on local history as well as models and original artefacts relating to the history of the railway in Buchloe. The two subjects offer different ways to explore the town: one focuses on its local history, the other on its railway history. The museum also has a six-part audio guide. In it, the radio club at Buchloe Grammar School presents some of the museum’s treasures.

The Local History Museum is open on the first Sunday of every month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Special and group tours are available on request. This regular monthly opening time is useful when planning your trip if the museum is an important reason for your stay. St Stephen’s Church offers another glimpse into Buchloe’s history: it is the town’s oldest church. A churchwarden of St Stephen’s is documented for both 1299 and 1311.

Circular Trails in the City Forest and a Hiking Trail to Marktoberdorf

Buchloe City Forest has several specially marked circular trails for hiking, Nordic walking and jogging. This offers different ways to include some exercise in your stay. The Great City Forest Circular Trail is marked with a red dot in both directions. Its route leads not only through the city forest, but also to the districts of Honsolgen and Hausen. If you choose this trail, you can follow the markings and its described route.

The Ostallgäu Hiking Trail is different: you can follow it from Buchloe all the way to its end in Marktoberdorf. This gives you a choice between marked circular trails in the city forest and a hiking trail that ends in Marktoberdorf. If you are travelling with different interests in mind, the museum, walking and running options, or a longer hike can each be the focus, without needing to combine them into a single route.

Markets on Set Dates

The farmers’ market in Buchloe takes place every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Immleplatz. This makes it possible to plan a visit for a specific day of the week and time slot. The Christmas market offers a different reason to visit: it takes place from Friday to Sunday on the second weekend of Advent at the church car park. The farmers’ market is a regular Saturday event, while the Christmas market is an occasion to visit during Advent weekend. If a market is important to your trip, it is worth choosing your stay to fit the relevant date.
