Geographical Location

Meßkirch is a small town in Baden-Württemberg in the district of Sigmaringen. It is located in western Upper Swabia, southwest of Sigmaringen, between the Danube and Lake Constance.

History

Meßkirch developed into a market settlement in the 12th or 13th century; documented market rights date from 1241, and town rights from 1261.

Around 1300, Meßkirch became a residence; the Old Castle and the inner and outer town walls with two town gates were subsequently built.

The medieval town wall already enclosed the Grabenviertel district. Ceramic finds west of the town church indicate an older part of the town.
