Water Tower and Architectural History

The historic water tower was handed over to the municipality of the time in 1907 by the company Stephan und Schneider, after just under a year of construction. At 47.6 metres, it was Eppelheim’s tallest structure until the 1970s. This figure gives a sense of the building’s scale. Its water tank held 220 cubic metres; in the past, the natural fall in elevation created the pressure needed in the local water pipes. This also makes the tower’s technical purpose tangible.

Brick construction, a contrasting sandstone base and a replica arcade define its architecture. A landmark of the town, the water tower is a listed monument and houses a wedding room. The first German Rabbit Museum opened on the ground floor in 2009.

The late Gothic tower portal of St Paul’s Church also reaches far back in time: it dates from the 15th century and is Eppelheim’s oldest surviving building section. Rudolf-Wild-Halle offers an annual programme featuring classical and modern theatre, comedy, cabaret, regional dialect performances, and music for all ages.
