Experience nature and winegrowing on trails

In the Büchsenberg nature reserve near Achkarren there is a forest and nature trail. Its botanical highlights include dittany and downy oak. Anyone interested in plants and landscapes will find a different perspective here than on a trail focused primarily on winegrowing: The 3.6-kilometre Achkarrer Schlossberg Trail runs through the “Schlossberg” vineyard site. Together with the Kaiserstuhl Wine Museum in the centre of Achkarren, it offers insights into the soil, climate, grape varieties and history of winegrowing in the Kaiserstuhl.

Hiking trails to the viewpoints of Vogtsburg’s wine-growing hills are another option. This means that observing nature, learning about winegrowing and enjoying the views each offer a different focus. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your vacation.

Burkheim and Niederrotweil: Architecture and tradition

In Burkheim, the historic, listed Mittelstädtle—with its burghers’ houses and half-timbered houses, town hall and town gate—defines the townscape. Another facet of local culture comes to life on a tour with Burkheim’s night watchman, who sings a night-watchman’s song in Alemannic. Historic architecture and oral musical tradition offer two different ways to explore the town’s history.

In Niederrotweil, the Catholic fortified church of St. Michael is home to an important work of woodcarving: the Marian altar by Master HL is considered a major work of German woodcarving and was created between 1516 and 1520. The church is also a point of interest for pilgrims, as the Baden Way of St. James passes by it. Pilgrims can receive a pilgrim stamp there. Together, these details create a distinctive cultural focus, different from the wine trails and nature themes.
