One early reference dates back to the 9th century: Betzenweiler was probably first mentioned as “Perahtramnilvillare” as early as 817, when it passed into the possession of St. Gallen Abbey. The early form of the name and the change of ownership are two distinct aspects of this historical reference.

Another key date is 1275, when the parish of Betzenweiler was first mentioned. St. Clemens is the village’s Roman Catholic parish church. Its four bells are named St. Maria, St. Clemens, St. Antonius and St. Josef. The year 1275 refers to the parish’s first mention.

Bischmannshausen, a district of Betzenweiler, also has its own church-history milestones: a Marian chapel was mentioned there in 1693. Today’s Bischmannshausen Käppele is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and was built in 1909 by residents of Bischmannshausen to replace an earlier chapel.
