A long sandy beach on Mallasvesi, storytelling cultural routes and traces of a battle from the Great Northern War: Pälkäne offers a variety of ways to spend your days by the water, staying active or enjoying culture. When looking for a holiday rental, it can therefore be important to decide which experiences you want to focus on during your trip.

Shoreline experiences and trails

Pakanranta Beach in Onkkaala is a long sandy beach on Mallasvesi. It has a pier, a playground, a beach volleyball court and outdoor fitness equipment. The beach also offers boat berths and a boat launch. If you’d like to get out on the water, the summer kiosk rents kayaks and canoes.

The Pakanranta shoreline trail offers sections of different lengths. The 700-metre accessible section starts at the beach car park and runs along the shore of Mallasvesi to a viewing platform built by the water. The trail is well suited to families with children, older people and people with reduced mobility. You can then continue along an approximately 500-metre nature trail that loops around Peltoniemi. These distances refer to the individual sections and can help you plan the amount of time you spend by the shore.

Pälkäne is also worth considering for a cycling holiday: the cycling route around the Roine waterway system is about 80 kilometres long and passes through the landscapes and attractions of Pälkäne, Kangasala and Valkeakoski. Pakanranta is listed as a recommended stop for cyclists on the Roine cycling route in Pälkäne. This makes it easy to include a visit to the beach as part of a longer bike tour, rather than planning it solely as a destination for a day by the shore.

The Syrjänharju recreation area offers another option for active days. It has trails suitable for mountain biking, a disc golf course, a permanent orienteering course and shelters. There is also a fitness trail just over six kilometres long. If you’d rather visit a viewpoint, you’ll find one at the top of the Pälkäne stairs.

Discover culture and history

The Pajuparven Farm Museums are housed in the buildings and courtyard of the Tiililä Farm, founded in 1709. The barns and granaries display old agricultural equipment, kitchen antiques and vintage utility glassware. Guided tours and group visits can be arranged by appointment. The collections offer a tangible insight into agricultural tools and everyday objects, while the farm buildings provide the setting for the museum visit.

The Pälkäne cultural routes lead through the municipality’s cultural history, with storytelling stops along the way. One of the four sites is in the centre of Pälkäne, in Onkkaala. For a different way to experience arts, crafts and café culture, visit Spirraali: in Nuijantalo, Noora Rosberg runs a boutique, artist’s studio and art café. The shop offers wire-crafted gifts and unique home furnishings. The café serves savoury and sweet handmade baked goods, as well as coffee in rose-patterned cups.

The landscape has its own stories to tell. In 1604, a natural disaster created the Kostianvirta: Pälkänevesi broke through the lowest point of the ridge and formed a new outlet to Mallasvesi. The Battle of Kostianvirta was fought in Pälkäne in 1713. It was part of the Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia and is considered one of its decisive battles. On the banks of the Kostianvirta in Nenäpää stands a memorial stone erected in 1906 and designed by J. A. Packalén; there is also a reconstruction of a wooden fortification. Defensive trenches dating from the battle are still visible in the terrain.

When choosing your holiday rental in Pälkäne, you can use your personal interests as a guide: do you want your trip to focus on the shoreline trail and Mallasvesi, cycling and outdoor activities, or culture and history? The range of experiences includes everything from the short accessible section at Pakanranta and the approximately 80-kilometre cycling route to museums, cultural routes and historic sites.
