Kustavi combines fascinating stories with glimpses of archipelago nature: a historic fortress island, a tall lighthouse, an old Midsummer tradition and a nature and culture trail give the area its many facets. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on history, nature, local culture or outdoor activities.

Lighthouse, fortress island and historic routes

Katanpää served as a fortress island during the First World War and is now a culturally and historically valuable attraction. The destination is open to all boaters. Katanpää therefore offers a different kind of historical experience from the Isokari Lighthouse, which was completed in 1833 during the reign of Russian Tsar Nicholas I. At 49.4 metres, it is Finland’s second-tallest lighthouse. In summer, guided tours of the tower are available on the lighthouse island. Those interested in maritime history can therefore find tangible architectural history here and the opportunity to explore the lighthouse on a guided tour.

Kustavi’s wooden church also tells of different eras. It was consecrated at its present location in 1783. Its current pulpit dates from the 1640s and comes from the Chapel of St John. The “To the Church” route also explores a literary and cultural theme: it is based on Volter Kilpi’s book “Kirkolle”. Another historical connection is the Suuri Postitie, known in Swedish as Stora Postvägen. It ran from Turku via Mynämäki to Kustavi, then continued by sea via Åland, Grisslehamn and Norrtälje to Stockholm.

Traditions and everyday history

In Kustavi, Midsummer poles are called “Maistonki” and are part of a tradition that has continued there for more than two hundred years. Kustavi is the only Finnish-speaking municipality where this tradition exists. The poles can be seen throughout the year, including in South and North Vartsala and in Rahi. This means the tradition is not limited to Midsummer: these locations offer a tangible connection to it at other times of the year, too.

Those who would like to learn more about past life and livelihoods in the Kustavi area can include the Kustavi Archipelago Museum in their plans. It displays collected and donated objects, as well as documents from the region. The museum is open from Midsummer until the end of August; guided tours can be arranged on request outside this period. You can connect your visit thematically with the wooden church or historic routes, without needing to combine these places into a single tour.

Archipelago nature and outdoor activities

The Kustavi Nature and Culture Trail is about four kilometres long. Information boards along the route introduce both archipelago nature and local culture. The listed starting points are the yard of the municipal office at Keskustie 7 and the car park in front of the ferry terminal. The route offers a way to explore nature and culture together; allow for its roughly four-kilometre length when planning your day. In the Kustavi area, the Ströömi waterway is also designated as a nationally valuable landscape area.

Isokari has diverse flora and fauna, with 380 plant species recorded on the island. This is a distinct natural attraction alongside the lighthouse’s history. Activities available in Kustavi include kayaks, canoes, SUP boards, bicycles and camping equipment for hire. There are also two regularly used disc golf courses, one of them in central Kustavi. Four official swimming spots are located in natural waters, either in the sea or by a lake.

Local treats and cultural events

Friisilä Farm combines cultivation with seasonal refreshments: early potatoes, various root vegetables, peas, berries and summer flowers are grown there. In summer, the café at Friisiläntie 8 serves fresh pastries, cakes and a homemade lunch every day. In July, the Kustavi Literary Association organises Volter Kilpi Kustavi Literature Week. The programme includes talks on literature and culture, theatre and music. In addition to nature and historic sites, culinary and cultural events offer options for different travel interests.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Kustavi, you can start by considering which of these facets matters most for your trip: the history of the church and lighthouse, archipelago nature, outdoor activities, or local culture and cuisine. This will help you choose accommodation suited to the experiences you want to make the focus of your stay in Kustavi.
