Kokkola combines a remarkable history of wooden architecture with museum visits and nature experiences in the archipelago. In Neristan, old wooden houses shape the townscape; on Tankar, highlights include a working lighthouse and a marked nature trail. This lets you choose your own focus for your trip, from local history and collections to island nature.

Neristan and Kokkola’s history

Neristan comprises 12 blocks and hundreds of wooden houses. The oldest date back to the 18th century. The district is among Finland’s most valuable, best-preserved and largest surviving wooden town districts. If you would like to explore the old town with a guide, you can book guided tours of Neristan or sightseeing tours of Kokkola by arrangement throughout the year.

Fredrik and Anna Drake’s house in the old town offers a glimpse into a particular family’s history. It was built in the 1830s, and four generations of the Drake artisan family lived there. Places like this complement the broader view of the extensive wooden district with the history of a single house.

Museums and diverse collections

The K. H. Renlund Museum in the town centre is dedicated to art and local history. In its museum district, you can experience the atmosphere of a merchant’s house and discover Kokkola’s history. Kieppi, also in the museum district in the town centre, features natural history, mineral and butterfly collections. The different subjects offer a varied way to explore the area, from urban life and its history to natural history and mineralogy.

The Kaarlela Local Heritage Museum in the Kirkonmäki district offers another perspective. It showcases local rural culture from the 19th century. If you would like to spend your time in Kokkola exploring its culture, you can discover both the town’s history and what life in the countryside used to be like in the area.

Tankar: lighthouse, nature trail and archipelago

Tankar is part of the Luoto archipelago and the Natura 2000 network. The island’s lighthouse was completed in 1889 and is still in operation. A marked nature trail, 1.5 kilometres long, starts at the guest harbour. Along the route are the lighthouse, a bird station, a birdwatching tower and information boards about the island’s natural environment. The trail brings together island nature and points of interest, so you can explore a range of themes.

A regular boat service from Kokkola to Tankar operates from May until autumn. This seasonal service is an important difference from exploring the town: if Tankar is part of your plans, take the season into account when choosing your travel dates. On the island, overnight accommodation is available in the pilot station buildings: a hostel, a guesthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s house.

More nature views at Trullevi

At the northern fishing harbour of Trullevinniemi, there is a birdwatching tower and an accessible viewing platform. From there, you can look out over the extensive archipelago and the open sea. The Trullevi hiking trail also passes ancient boulder fields called Pirunpelto near the Valkohieta car park. They were formed from rock eroded and transported by glaciers. This landscape offers a different focus on nature from views of the sea and islands.

Choosing the right location for your trip

If Neristan and the museums are your main focus, Kokkola’s compact centre is a convenient base: services are close together and easy to reach on foot. For trips to Tankar, by contrast, the seasonal boat service from Kokkola shapes your plans. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether your trip will focus mainly on local history, the different museum collections or the nature of the archipelago.
