Jämsänkoski has been shaped by the use of hydropower and its industrial history. This use has a long history along the narrow stretch of rapids in the upper reaches of the Jämsänjoki River. Preserved traces from different periods make the industrial past a special theme for your trip: the industrial area features an acid tower and a sulphur container from the 1960s. At Rekolankoski, upstream from Koskikeskus, an old mill and a power plant built in 1922 have been preserved.

Industrial History and Collections

Taidetalo Pässinmäki also offers insights into the history of the area. In the main building, it presents a permanent exhibition drawn from the foundation’s collections. The exhibits include memorial crosses from the Winter War and the Continuation War, along with their award certificates. Also on display is the Knight’s insignia awarded to Tauno Savolainen, Knight of the Mannerheim Cross No. 24. The varied exhibits give your visit a tangible historical focus.

At the Aarresaari Local History Museum, you can explore local agricultural and industrial history in ten buildings. The museum grounds also host recurring family events: a family Christmas celebration has been held there since 1998, as well as an annual family celebration at Midsummer. If you are travelling with children, you can make a visit at these times a special reason to stay in the area; the exhibitions also offer an independent way to explore local history.

Rapids, Forests and Outdoor Activities

Jämsänkoski combines its industrial history with a natural setting of rapids and nearby forests that invite you to spend time outdoors. Another place to get active is Myllymäki DiscGolfPark. Its first tee and information board are at the edge of the Jämsänkoski ice rink car park. This gives you a specific landmark to help you start your visit to the disc golf park.

For water activities, Koskikara swimming pool has a sports pool, a therapy pool and a children’s pool. There is also a gym, a sauna and a steam room. In summer, Koskikara offers swimming at nearby Koskikeskinen; in winter, you can go ice swimming. This means you can choose from different water experiences in different seasons, from swimming pools and a steam room to seasonal outdoor activities.

Sports and Events

Oinaala Sports Centre has athletics and football fields. In the centre of Jämsänkoski, there is also the Jukka Virtanen sports field, with a grass pitch and a 500-seat grandstand. These sports facilities offer different options: Oinaala combines athletics and football, while the central sports field provides a specific venue with a grandstand. The Huhdavuori ski centre is also located in Jämsänkoski.

FinnMetko is another reason to visit: the event takes place in Jämsänkoski every two years. You can look for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Jämsänkoski to suit your preferred focus for the trip, without needing to combine the different experiences into a single itinerary.
