Lestijärvi
Accommodation in Lestijärvi
Hike between nature reserves, take a canoe trip through rapids, or stroll by the lake: Lestijärvi offers a variety of ways to experience nature actively. When planning your holiday, the key question is what kind of outing you want to focus on. The Peuran polku trail is suitable for longer hikes; there is a circular trail around Valkeinen, and the Lestijoki offers a canoe route with a landscape all its own.
Hiking trails and lake scenery
The Peuran polku trail is 77 kilometres long and runs from Perho through Lestijärvi to Reisjärvi. Some sections are rocky, making it more suitable for experienced hikers. If you include this route in your travel plans, you should therefore allow for a longer hike and a more challenging trail. The Peuran polku passes through four nature reserves, offering nature experiences along an extensive route.
Valkeinen is a recommended starting point for hikes on the Peuran polku trail in Lestijärvi. A circular trail about 5.5 kilometres long runs around the clear lake. The Pökkelöniemi hut is located halfway along the trail and makes a good place to take a break. Valkeinen therefore offers a different hiking option from the long, partly rocky Peuran polku: here, the focus is on a circular trail around the lake, while the Peuran polku passes through several places.
Syrinharju is another option for getting around on foot or by mountain bike. The area is about 6 kilometres from the centre of Lestijärvi, in the direction of Toholampi, and is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. If you would like to include different activities in your holiday plans, you can choose between the longer Peuran polku, the circular trail at Valkeinen, and the options in Syrinharju.
Canoeing on the Lestijoki
The canoe route on the Lestijoki passes through wilderness and quiet marshland, with several rapids along the way. This trip combines peaceful scenery with stretches where the water is shaped by rapids. It is therefore quite different from the hiking trails described above. If you would like your trip to centre on a canoe journey, the Lestijoki offers a unique way to experience the nature of Lestijärvi from the water.
Raivio is a rest stop for canoeists on the Lestijoki canoe route. It has a covered shelter, a fire pit with tables, a woodshed, an outdoor toilet, and a jetty. There is also a hut and a fire pit at Iso-Valkiainen, close to the destination. These places add to the range of places to stop and take a break, but they belong to different settings described here: Raivio is on the canoe route, while the Pökkelöniemi hut is on the circular trail at Valkeinen.
Take a stroll and discover nature
Kirkkosaari has a fire pit and a circular trail that invites visitors to stroll around and explore the island. There is also a small chapel, a quiet place for people on the water, anglers, and hunters. Kirkkosaari thus combines a walk around the island with a peaceful spot that has special significance for these groups of visitors.
The Pomokallio nature trail has a different focus: its 20 information boards cover birds, mushrooms, trees, and forestry. The trail is 1.2 kilometres long and is suitable for school trips. The boards cover a range of topics relating to nature and forestry. At Pomokallio, the focus is therefore on learning along the way, while Kirkkosaari offers other ways to spend time outdoors, with its circular trail, fire pit, and chapel.
