Toivakka – Culture and experiences on Lake Päijänne
Accommodation in Toivakka
Toivakka combines its location on Lake Päijänne with a remarkable church, insights into local history and various opportunities to spend time outdoors. The town is on the eastern side of the lake. If you would like to combine culture and outdoor activities during your stay, you will find several different points of interest to help plan your trip.
Lake Päijänne and water activities
Ristiselkä is in a special geographical location on Lake Päijänne: there, in front of Rappukallio in the western part of Toivakka, lies the deepest point in Finland’s inland waters. Lake Päijänne thus shapes not only the town’s location but also provides the setting for experiences on the water. The lakes in Toivakka are suitable for canoeing. If you are considering such a trip, you can contact Pisto Pro Oy for information about equipment hire, canoe trips and routes.
There is a public winter swimming spot at Uimala. Swimming is at your own risk; Toivakan Jäänsärkijät ry and the municipality of Toivakka are jointly responsible for the swimming spot. There is also a beach volleyball court next to Uimala, at Toivakantie 62. Water activities and ball games are two separate options to consider when choosing what to do.
Church and local history
Toivakka Church was built between 1879 and 1882. During the interior renovation in 1923, architect Alvar Aalto designed, among other things, ceiling paintings, chandeliers and the pulpit. These works give the church interior a special connection to Finnish architectural history.
The local heritage museum in the Old Parsonage area focuses on rural life in the first half of the 20th century. Exhibits illustrate agriculture, forestry and cooking; some also cover hunting, fishing and transport. The Old Parsonage itself dates from the late 19th century. Also in this area, the veterans’ shelter displays wartime memorabilia. A 76 mm gun stands outside the shelter. This means you can plan a cultural and historical visit that offers insights into both everyday life and the memory of war.
Trails and excursions in Toivakka
For a walk, Huikko has a 1.5 km laavu trail with a rest area and campfire site. If you would rather go mountain biking, Huikko has an easy 5 km route at Temiseväntie 45. The Perinnepolku trail is marked with signs bearing the words “Perinnepolku” and Vakkaukko symbols. These options offer different kinds of experiences: a stated trail length with a place to rest, an easy mountain biking route or the marked Perinnepolku.
The circular route “A Day in Toivakka” also provides a distinct framework for planning your day. It is just over 20 km long in total and can be driven by car; in summer, it is also possible to cycle it. If you are interested in forest history, Elisabeth’s Forest is another special point of interest: the forest on the UPM estate Metsä-Piililä is designated a WWF Heritage Forest and is associated with the state visit by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in May 1976. It was intended to be preserved as a natural picnic forest.
In summer, the Toivakka Rally also draws visitors to Toivakka. Together with the trails, lake and cultural and historical sites, it shows that you can shape your stay around different interests without all your activities having to share the same theme.
Toivakka as a base for your stay
Toivakka is about 35 km from Jyväskylä and can be reached by car via Route 4 in less than 30 minutes. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore take this travel time into account alongside the local activities. Consider whether Lake Päijänne, cultural history, or the range of trails and activities in Toivakka is the main priority for your trip.
