Ylojarvi combines varied paths through forests and along lakes with distinctive cultural sites. Teivaalanharju, also known as Ylöjärvenharju, is part of a ridge that runs through Pirkanmaa. Depending on when you travel and what interests you, you can choose between hiking, cross-country skiing and cycling; nature trails and historic buildings round out the options. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your stay.

Harju Landscapes and Trails for Every Season

Ylöjärvenharju has a ski route in winter and a hiking route in summer. The illuminated fitness trails there are about 20 kilometres long in total. The Harju also has extensive cycling trail networks, available in both winter and summer. These different options offer various ways to experience the landscape: you can plan your trip around a seasonal route or combine exercise with other discoveries.

The shorter nature trails each have their own character, too. The Puut Nature Trail follows the shores of Veittijärvi near the centre of Ylojarvi. Information boards introduce almost all tree species that grow wild in Finland. If you are interested in trees, this is a trail where nature observation and information about native species take centre stage.

The Haavisto fitness trail is about four kilometres long, flat, illuminated and easy to navigate with a pram. In winter, there is a ski track there. The nature trail in the Pikku-Ahvenisto area is different: it runs for 1.5 kilometres around the lake and is easy to walk. In the Pikku-Ahvenisto nature reserve, hikers can also use a shelter free of charge. The trail lengths and their features can help you choose suitable outings for your stay.

For further insights into forests and nature, you can include the Seitsemisen Nature Centre in your plans. It serves as a year-round base for hikers and offers a forest-themed exhibition as well as food and drink. The Tiitiäisen Forest is a protected area established in honour of writer Kirsi Kunnas. The nature experience therefore ranges from trails and landscapes to a woodland with a literary connection.

Water Activities and Cultural Sites

Another way to experience nature is at the former Haveri open-pit mine, which has filled with water and is considered a nationally significant diving site. The Haveri mine site is also suitable for winter diving. If you are choosing activities for your stay based on your outdoor interests, you can make this special diving opportunity a focus alongside hiking, skiing or cycling.

Pikku-Ahvenisto is also a cultural site in another sense: the villa was completed in the early 20th century and is now a function venue for 50 people. In Kulju, the old Vikelä windmill stands near the shore of Lake Näsijärvi; it probably dates from 1838. Ylöjärvi Church was completed in 1850. These sites showcase different aspects of architectural history without requiring a single thematic focus.

Vanha Räikkä is an almost 200-year-old building on Ylojarvi’s town hall square. It houses a café-restaurant and an exhibition space, with art exhibitions changing monthly. The best-known attraction at the Kuru Open-Air Museum is Vänrikki Stool’s cabin. Ensign Polviander once lived there, and his stories gave J. L. Runeberg material for his poetry collections. Nature, diving and culture are different reasons to consider including Ylojarvi in your travel plans.
